Does June gloom last all month?

Hi everyone! We are trying still to make a trip to DL, and are considering June. We are thinking June 22-26, to avoid grad nights for one thing. My main concern is avoiding the June gloom I have been reading about. Does this last well into the last week of June? When does it end? Does it sometimes even go into the beginning of July? I would so appreciate any advice, since I do NOT want to go in the gooom, only sunshine LOL!

It's typically only a morning/early afternoon phenomenon and has never spoiled our fun. I actually prefer it ... its sure better than baking in the intense sun while waiting in line.

In my experience, June Gloom is mainly gloomy to those who are used to living in So Cal. It's not gloomy at all for us, it's rather nice, actually!

My brother and SIL in San Diego, though, hate it. Feel that it's cold. They're just used to the extra sunny weather.

Has never impacted our visits, when you live in the NW it is very nice.

Yap - all month. But it usually burns off by noon'ish. It can still get hot! I remember many june visits when it is in the 90's.

IME, the gloom in SoCal is mainly limited to the coastal areas. Further inland (i.e., Anaheim) it may start off foggy but will usually burn off well before noon. I agree with the PPs that it's kind of nice. Makes the morning cooler but still hot/sunny enough in the afternoon to swim, ride GRR/Splash, etc.

I've experienced May Gray and June Gloom many times. After living in Houston for four years I freeze in that cool gray dampness. While I know it is more frequent during the late spring/early summer time frame I've experienced that type of weather at other times of year when visiting SoCal. I've never let it ruin my vacation. I do pack warmer clothes though now no matter what the forecast says before I leave.

June Gloom will ruin a day at the beach, but shouldn't affect Disneyland too much. It should burn off by noon.

May Gray and June Gloom occur during the early months of summer when things start heating up on land, but the water in the ocean hasn't quite caught up in temperature yet. This results in very dense marine-layer clouds that can stretch pretty far inland. The further inland you are, the earlier it burns off. In Anaheim, it should burn off by noon or earlier.

But, as most other people have been saying, I wouldn't worry about June gloom too much. It's worst at the beach, where it can occasionally hang around all day if it's really bad. But even at the beach, it should burn off by noon on average. But in Anaheim, it'll just keep things cool and foggy in the morning. A lot of people actually appreciate June Gloom, as it shades them from the intense summer sun.

By the way, the it can be very cloudy during these mornings, there is still virtually no precipitation that comes out of these clouds. And by late June, you may not even be experiencing much of any morning gloom anymore, if it's a good year. Though, this past year was pretty bad, and it even stretched into July. Depends on the year...

What I would really be worrying about during late June, though, are crowds. Everyone's out of school by mid June...

Thats a whole morning, and seems depressing to wake up to gloom and not sunshine! Myself, I would rather have heat and sunshine than gloom. So, now what for me? The last poster mentioned crowds at the end of June. Maybe the very end of August thru Labor Day weekend? Does the end of April get the morning gloom too? That is my other option. Any thoughts would be so appreciated, we really have to make up our mind.

it sounds like you're talking about marine layer - that always burns off by mid to late morning.

I wouldn't plan a trip around the potential for a cloudy/foggy morning. We have experienced it at DLR in August, September, March and November. Our worst experience with the marine layer was in mid-August at the beach. While it stuck around the beach the entire day all weekend, it was gorgeous blue sky and sunny 1/2 mile inland.

Just as there is no way to guarantee the weather (it could be raining when you are there for all you know), there is no way to avoid the marine layer for certain. I'd focus on the other factors that are important to you.

Also, you can't let a little fog in the morning ruin your trip! After all, you are still at DLR, and hey, the lines might be a little shorter!

I am actually looking forward to June Gloom. We are normally at WDW in June where the heat and humidity can be pretty intense. We will be at DL from 6/8-6/16 so I am hoping for mild weather.

Don't think of it as a bad thing - consider it an opportunity to get photos in lighting without shadows or squinting from staring into the sun!

I remember August being hot and sunny. I haven't been in April yet (hope to do that this year). I'm hoping April will be less crowded than August, but I would expect it to be much cooler.

Maybe I should just go to DW in April LOL, then I am quaranteed sunshine ALL day! Thank you everyone so much for you comments, and trying to be positive for me, I do appreciate it! By the way, does April have June gloom, or rain? If rain, how bad is it? All day, or just showers here or there? I'm such an expert on DW, I am just absolutely ignorant on DL! The problem with planning a trip around weather is that weather in SoCal is SOOO unpredictable. Today it is 60 and sunny. Two days ago it was 48 and raining. I have had "April Showers", but I have also gone to the parks when it was 70 and sunny in April. You can make statements like "February is usually the wettest month" or "August is typically very dry and sunny", but to ask the difference between June and August and plan a trip around it is very tricky. You could easily plan for June and get great weather. You could also plan for August and have weird weather. There is really no way of knowing and I'd hate for you to be disappointed either way.

So you rather go in July when it's crowded and can be scorching hot out, over June when crowds are very manageable and the temperature is a constant, perfect 72-78 degrees?

Your call, but that miserable July heat isn't fun, nor are July crowds.

And, then, of course, is LA's unpredictable weather. About two summers ago the average July temperature was in the high-60's while the city scorched in September.

June Gloom can be a hit and miss kinda thing. In some years, it's a little thicker and takes longer to burn off and other years, the June Gloom isn't really that bad. What June Gloom is basically the marine layer. Generally, if you're by the coast it will last longer but since DLR is more inland, it generally burns off by late morning/early afternoon and then it's really nice weather.

I wouldn't let that stop you from visiting as it will not ruin your experience and you might even appreciate the early morning protection from the sun.

If you are really concerned about the June Gloom, then I'd recommend going in August. August is the hottest month of the year, and there would be virtually zero chance of rain, or cloudy days for that matter. The one thing you can be sure of in August in Southern California is that it will be hot, and it will be sunny. Also, I think crowds are a little bit better in August than in June.

By the way, when I say zero percent chance of rain in August, I mean it. Take a look at this link, and look at the bottom graph: http://www.weather.com/weather/wxclimatology/monthly/graph/USCA0027
As you'll see from the graph, average precipitation is 0.01 inches! Virtually no rain falls in So Cal during the summer months.
By the way, if you take a look at the temperature graph, you'll see a big bump up in temps when you go from June to July and August. That's because June Gloom is usually gone by then.

Some people have been talking about the unpredictability of weather in So Cal. But most people who say that are from California, and think that a change from 70 one day to 65 the next is an incredibly drastic change in temperature. But it can have a little truth to the winter months, and the same can be true of the June Gloom season. Winter days can be sunny and warm in the 80s, or cold and rainy not even reaching 60. And June Gloom may be so weak some years that only people living right on the coast will notice it. However, August is a predictable month. The most unpredictable thing can be an occasional heat wave that will send temps soaring to triple-digits. But it sounds like from your other posts that you don't mind the heat. So you know it'll be hot and sunny... The only question is, exactly how hot?
