Does it bug you when cashiers comment on your purchases?

that doesn't bother me as much as when I use my CC or debit card and they call me by my first name when they hand me the register tape. I have an unusual name that they usually don't pronounce the right way and it just gives me the creeps to have someone I don't know call me by name.

One of my biggest pet peeves is people commenting on my food. Doesn't matter if I'm eating it or buying it. It just bugs me for some reason. There's one clerk at my grocery store that I avoid at all costs. I swear, every item that she scans, she has something to say about it. She's probably just trying to be friendly, but I can't stand it!

Hee hee! That reminded me....The night before Valentine's Day I went to the grocery store to rent movies for My DH and myself. Since I was also 4 months pregnant I decided to get some stuff to make hot fudge sundaes. I also got a V-Day card for my DH.

As I was setting all the stuff down on the counter I realized how bad all my purchases looked. So, I said to the cashier, "Good thing I'm buying a card for my husband, otherwise I'd look pretty pathetic right now."

Sometimes you just have to get to them before they can say anything.

Last week I had this exchange while purchasing my lunch for the day:

High school aged cashier: “How old are you.”
Me: “26” (I look like a teenager, I am sure she though I was 16)
High school aged cashier: “And you STILL don’t know how to cook for yourself?”

I don't mind really, especially because I WORK in a Supermarket. However, I don't check people out, I do place the price tags you all see, before you make your purchase. If a new product comes in, I get EXCITED and have to be the first to purchase it!

I work in a store that sells groceries (SuperTarget) and I've never heard anyone complain that a cashier made inappropriate conversation. The complaints I DO hear are that the cashier made no conversation. And cashiers are timed on how long it takes to complete your order, from the first item to the end of the transaction, so they probably are trying to make friendly conversation without getting into a long discussion. One way to do that is to "reinforce" the sale by complimenting the guest's choices.

However, they should not say anything negative or embarassing.

I guess maybe they don't realize? Once I made a little joke about packing a guest's toothpaste with all her candy (it was Halloween time). I hope she didn't think I was insulting her for buying a ton of tooth-rotting candy...I just thought it was funny to put them together.

I had one cashier ask me how well metamucil works, LOL.
Thankfully she didn't ask for details...


It's always funny when something rings up really cheap, the cashiers always want to know how many are left and they get all excited.

A friend of mine bought only items that were on sale at the local supermarket. The cashier yelled at her and told her she couldn't do that again. It wasn't fair to the store. She was so taken aback that she didn't know what to say! I do that all the time at one rather expensive supermarket that sometimes has really good specials.

I have to say that every one of these comments would really offend me! I guess I'm in the minority but I don't think any of these comments are appropriate and it would bother me.

I had one women when I was buying a bunch of magazines for a trip take time and actually look through the magazines I had bought. That pissed me off.

This thread brings a story to mind. True Story:

This was several years ago. DH and I were in the BX (the military's version of an overpriced Walmart) here in MD and the cashier at the time a teenager was ringing us up. Well DH had condoms(if I can say this) in our basket. I cannot take birth control pills as they cause me sever migranes, the shot made me have my menstral for like six months straight. We already at the time had one child DD and did not want anymore during this time. Anyway, as she was ringing us up, she starts laughing. DH and I looked at each other wanting to know what the joke was. Well she was laughing because was were buying condoms. I did not see the humor in people protecting themselves neither did, DH. DH and I just gathered our bags and left. Every time we went into the BX we made sure we got into her line to see if we would get the same snicker over other items that we purchased. About a month or to later we saw her in the Comissary working the cashier and jumped right into her line again. We never got anymore laughes after she kept seeing our faces over and over again.

Not the cashier, but another customer in line once commented on my items. I have to say it WAS a bit unusual, I was buying 14 gallons of milk and 10 boxes of dry milk powder- for a project at work (food company). So there I am with a cart full of milk products, and this lady says, "Honey, I just have to ask you- how many babies do you have at home?" Well, I was feeling particularly evil that day, so I replied, "Well, the twins are 2 1/2, and the triplets are just 3 months old!" Shut her right up!

I had someone comment on my buying a pg test one time. It really irked me. She starts asking me if we're trying, etc. and I'm thinking this was none of her business!

I don't mind people talking about regular items, except for making judgements about what you're buying, but employees should never comment on personal items!

If that were true at my grocery store, I could never shop there. I plan our weekly menu based on what's on sale and came home proud yesterday for not having paid full price for anything I bought.

The grocery store checkers sometimes ask "...is this good?" and I think that is fine. It might help some other shoppers at some point. On the other hand, when the checker at Best Buy comments on the CDs I am buying...

I don't mind friendly chit-chat, but comments on "personal" purchases make me cringe...

Sometime, when I'm feeling particularly evil, I think I'll go into line with: femine hygene products, atheletes foot/jock itch powder, condoms, Prep-H, a preg test, maddog 20/20, and other embarrassing items and I'LL TALK ABOUT ALL MY PURCHASES * insert evil laugh here*

OK, now that I got that out...Here in Texas, they have this "new" purchasing system at the Albertsons. You pick up a individual scanner and bags upon entering the store. You scan & bag your items as you go. At the end of the trip you go to a self check out and it downloads the info from your scanner. No checkers, no one sees whats in the bag. Very cool & very quick. I've tried it with no problems...I do wonder how they stop people from putting in unscanned items into their bags Don't worry! I'm not one of them

OMG! That is hilarious. You SHOULD have gone into the details with color, amount, consistency - that would have been great. LOL!

I'd rather a checkout operator had a conversation with me rather than the operator of the next checkout - I REALLY hate being completely ignored when I'm buying stuff. I feel like saying "Hellooooo, you mightn't really want me here, but if this store had no customers, you wouldn't have a job!"
Having said that, inquiries/comments about personal stuff is a no-no.
