Does it bother you when . . .

people start their post by saying "I haven't read this whole thread, but . . ."?

On another board I frequent, the mods will delete any post that says that. It is their position that if you don't take the time to read other people's posts, why should they take the time to read yours.

I haven't read the entire thread, but...

Sometimes I don't read the entire thread when I am wishing congratulations after four pages of congratualtions already. But I try to skim at least the last page before I post to make sure the situation hasn't changed since the original post.

If it is a personal situation, I like to read all the posts before I respond. I have seen the subjects in a thread make an about face and turn into a thread about something completely different. I wouldn't want to post something about the original subject.

I started thinking about this after reading a thread earlier today where someone jumped in and stated that they hadn't read the whole thread and then everything they posted had already been discussed, most of it at great length.

Yes, it annoys me. If you feel like you have to answer--at least check out what's already been said!

Yes and no. I understand your point but sometimes, if the OP was asking for an opinion, it doesn't seem necessary to read through 20 posts to say how I feel....although I almost always at least skim the thread (and more often I do read it).

I don't usually reply to a thread if I haven't read all the responses because I don't want to repeat what someone else has said. :)

Note that I said *usually*...sometimes I am in a rush and don't have time, but that is rare.

It doesn't really bother me. I tend to read whole threads before replying myself but it's not a biggie for me if others don't. If I see they are rehashing something that's already been discussed I usually just skip to the next post.

A little bit. I don't like when I take the time to write a response and then someone says the exact same thing later on.

I just did this today! I don't normally do it but it was a subject that I was very interested in and had lots of pages and the pages were not all loading on my computer - I read about 3/4's of the posts but couldn't access the rest. So to cover all bases I posted - "I haven't read all the threads but..."

I didn't realize it would be irritating - sorry.

Okay, aside from the repetition issue, what about the issue of "if you can't be bothered to read everyone else's posts, they shouldn't have to be bothered reading yours."

Does anyone feel offended that people who post after you flat out state that they can't take the time to read what you've posted?

Nope....Again, say the OP posts asking for opinions. I post my opinion. I really don't expect everyone else to care about my opinion (they didn't ask for it)...just the OP. The rest of the people are giving their opinions. I'm not saying it isn't great when someone quotes me and says they agree but I don't really worry about it one way or the other... Again...I usually do read the thread.. For me if I feeel moved to post, I'm usually interested what others have to say too.

no and no, not on these particular boards anyway

I guess this is more of an issue in a debate/discussion type thread than in an opinion oriented one.

I was just curious how people here felt about this.

This particular forum that has this rule is very strict--I call the mods "Board Nazis" only in private, of course.

I was just wondering how big of an issue this would be to posters in a different venue.

Thanks for your opinons. :D

Muffin - on another board that I lurk/read but don't post on, it would be VERY annoying, but it is a board for serious discussion/debate
