Maybe you can settle this 'disagreement' that my mom and I are having... :confused3

My mom recently went to the doctor for something completely unrelated to this and in addition to other things, he tells her that it's better to drink water from the tap because drinking ice water will make you gain weight...

My mom's under 5 feet and weighs less than 110. She don't need to lose weight...

But since then, she won't drink water with ice in it. I think it's absolutely crazy. I mean, we women who are not 'naturally thin' (and I'm right up in there...) have enough to worry about without having to worry about gaining weight from our ice water... :sad2:

So as I drink my water, (filled with ice thank you very much :rolleyes1 ) maybe someone can tell me how having ice in your water makes you gain weight.

I've never heard of such a thing? :confused3 Maybe that is why I've gained weight. Yeah that's it. I drink a lot of ice water! :goodvibes

I've actually heard the opposite. Some say your body burns calories warming the water.

I think it's opposite, actually. I drink my water with extra ice....so that I'll shiver....and thus burn calories!!! :rotfl2::rotfl2: What? You don't think shivering is exercise?? :rotfl2:

Tell me about it... First it's: "You need to drink more water." Now: "You have to drink it without ice cause you'll gain weight..."

MAKE UP YOUR MIND!!!

Who thinks of this stuff anyway?

If the waters really hot, will I shrink! :rotfl: Sorry couldn't resist, but I have never heard of such a crazy thing. Water temp has nothing to do with weight gain.

I always drink my water with tons of ice to cause the shivering, too. Your body burns more calories being cold than hot, and I figure if I'm gonna be trapped at a desk for 8 hours a day, any kind of passive "exercise" I can get is a good thing.

Heating up cold water in your body should make you lose weight, but the effect is small. Heating up a kilogram (2 pints) of water from freezing to body temp should cause you to burn 37 food calories. I think I have the math right.

What was the name of the Indian doctor/therapist that used to be on Oprah years ago?

I saw a show with him where he said it was healthier to drink room temp beverages, because your body wastes too much energy getting very cold or very warm liquids to body temperature.:rotfl: I thought it was crazy then, and I still think it is crazy!

OP- I think it is time for your mom to look for a new doctor (and I use that term loosely!)...

:rotfl2: This thread made me laugh out loud! You guys are so funny!! Now, I must put ice in my water, just to make me think that I am burning more calories.

Neither make you "gain" weight....technically if you drink ice water your body works a bit harder since its warming you after the cold that entered...in everyday life the effect is so minuscule its not worth thinking to much about lol...however ive always heard in a survival situation if u dont have a lot of food its better to drink the water when its warm so ur body doesnt burn any extra calories....so yea like i said...makes little to no difference in day to day life lol

when you drink ice water, yiour metabolism slows down for hours. and you will burn less calories due to that. so you dont actually gian weight, you just lose calories less efficiently.

Check on his wall to see where his degree was issued...I would bet on The University of Stupid.

Drinking any water to excess will put weight on you in the form of "water weight". If your body tends to retain water then the "extra" weight will stay a while longer but that would be the extent.

So I turn to my husband (drinking iced water) and say "apparently drinking water with ice in it makes you gain weight!" His response? "Oh well that's probably why I can't lose weight"...meanwhile he has a gallon tub of cookies and cream ice cream balanced on his stomach. Oh yes, I'm sure it's the water...
