I could've sworn that I saw it requires 2 regular dining credits, but I just went to book it and it says that it only accepts the premium package. Am I going crazy!?o_O

Yes, it is not available for Tier 1 seating for the first two shows. So if you tried to book one of those you would not be able to.

So, the next obvious question is is category 1 that much better to pay out of pocket for?

I have read that there are no bad seats in the house... however the one and only time I did HDDR it was from category 1 and I got kind of spoiled. You are definitely in the middle of the action.

The upper balcony side seats are good seats from a view perspective and performers even go up on the balcony but you should know that your back is to the stage/downstairs while you are eating so it makes it difficult to eat and watch at the same time. Some people do not like these seats because you can't eat while you watch and the meal part feels rushed without that ability.

Category 2 is at the back and sides of the downstairs and back of the balcony and shouldn't have that problem, you will just be furthest from the stage. I haven't sat there so I don't know what the view is realistically like from there.

here is the seating chart:

Distribution of tables and categories, prior to any combining of tables.
. . . Cat-1 tables are main floor back to row8, they are the best seats
. . . Cat-2 tables are the seven tables in row9 on main floor
. . . Cat-2 tables are the last four on left/right wings
. . . Cat-2 tables are the eight rear balcony tables facing stage
. . . Cat-3 tables are the eight tables on both balcony sides
. . . Cat-2 and Cat-3 tables may have posts in the viewing way **
. . . Cat-3 tables require one-half of the table to turn around to see

** There are four large tables for big families. If there are no big families (which seldom happens), they will mix small families of 2-4 to fill the tables. This allows HDDR to maximize the seating, and revenue. If there are more than one group at the table, each group has its own "family style" menu items. I often assign seats for HDDR, and wince when I put folks behind pillars or have the pillars in their line-of-sight.

There really aren't any bad seats at HDDR! We prefer category 1 seating, and yes we think it is worth it paying out of pocket. But we will also gladly use 2 TS credits on category 2. We have done both cat 1 & 2 many times. When we aren't on the DDP (like this years trip we aren't), then we have no problem paying for category 1 seating. It is so much fun and so worth it! When we've done cat 1, we've been right at the stage and it is awesome!

do you do this by the order booked? If I reserve it at 180+7 or so table for 2 what are my chances of being with another family? I kind of want my privacy. Cat 1.

I have only gone once and we booked cat 1 well in advance and were I think right in front of the stage. Hoping for a great seat booking so early!

I think if you haven't done it many times and it is your first it is worth it to pay OOP. I am taking my kiddo to WDW, we only go every 2+ years. He will be 8, first HDDR. I haven't been in 15 years. Paying OOP for cat 1 at the 6:15 show because time and cat 1 is important to me.

I brought my sister and BIL in 2014, we were right at the stage and they LOVED it! We will have my niece with us this time, she'll be 18 months old when we go, but I made sure to book category 1 again. We always do the 6:15 show - perfect dinner time for us! We booked it right at our 180 day, so I know the tables are given on a first come first serve basis. The earlier you book, the better your table assignment will be. :thumbsup2

HDDR tables are prioritized in category by WHEN the ressie was made
. . . whether via phone or on-line.
. . . example: a Cat-1 ressie made in January gets a better table than a Cat-1 ressie made in February
. . . example: a Cat-1 ressie made within 7-days of the show gets Cat-1 leftovers

I am planning to book right at 180 days + 7 (it is our last night there). I just availability on a whim for 180 days out (a friday night so maybe 179) this morning and cat 1 was already sold out for 6:15 show! is that typical?

I've never heard of anyone being placed with another family.
