Does everyone tip Mousekeeping?

I agree...mom's definately have the toughest job in the world. But I'd have to say the BEST...I retired to stay at home with my twins and it was was the best decision I ever made. A person can't put a price on paying a mom.

I guess cleaning three toilets in my own home appreciates others work when I get the chance to go away. (laughing out loud). All this talk about toilets...ickkk...

my dh has the mgmt position and he's a very generous man. He goes "out of his way" to thank the people some fail to recognize (no fault of their own)...People are so busy these days. Although he wouldn't admit it, he loves contributing to these boards.

It's humorous and I hope everyone takes it lightly...

Since it is considered a non-tipped position, they probably don't give a share to the IRS like the tipped positions have to so they actually make out better.

Um, well, I would sleep in my car before I'd stay at one of the above chains, but, when staying at a Hilton or Marriott or Westin, yes, I leave a tip for the housekeeper.

ROFL! I must say though that I have yet to find one of the ones you've listed on my travels on 95 down to WDW. So I must slum it and stay at either a Hampton Inn or Country Inn. Oh wait, we do stay at a Marriot in Rocky Mount. It is one of our favorites for an overnighter and we have stayed there when we stop in that town.

Hampton is part of the Hilton family. Though not my favorite we do stay at them now and then when we just need a place to sleep and shower, although I much prefer the Hilton Garden Inns.

Oops! You are right! I forgot all about my Hilton miles card I have and use with them. Do they have and Hilton Garden Inns on 95 towards WDW? I will have to check that out when we drive again next May.

Hi. I plan to tip daily, as well as have the room not all messed up. I work for a time share as an housekeeping inspector, and I have come across rooms that if I saw the people who stayed in them to tear them up, I would have made them clean the room. I have seen rooms that have had the cushions slashed, used condoms in the jacuzzi, especially the holidays the amount of trash. I would love to see how these people's homes look,because they pay for the units and trash them. I do get paid well for my job and the housekeepers get paid well also. It is the job we have chosen to do.
One bad part is if I go to a hotel, I have a tendency to look more closely at the room then other people would. Plus, I don't use the the blankets and comforters, because I know they are not cleaned every time a guest leaves. I also at the end of my stay, gather all up all the linen and the trash,so it is one less thing the housekeeper has to do. I have had days where rooms have been just nasty then I go to a room that has been hardly touched, or a guest leaves a tip, or a thank you note, or even a soft drink that hasn't been opened, and it has brightened up my day.

I tip housekeepers, but as others have said, it isn't a tipped position and there's absolutely nothing wrong with not tipping.


We use those cute little envelopes too! I have to admit that the reason I tip is more selfish than anything else! For $5, I get a nice feeling that maybe I've brightened someone's day just a little. Making those cute little envelopes and laying one out each morning has become a part of our vacation and I enjoy doing it.

Our mousekeeper on our last trip was outstanding. She made some absolutely hilarious "towel scenes" with the towel animals she created. There were times we would came back to the room in a not so great mood and she would have done something with them that put a smile on all our faces!

She came by several times during our stay to check on us and make sure everything was being taken care of to our satisfaction. She even made a point of stopping by the morning we were checking out to wish us a safe trip home and to tell us how much she appreciated the tips and the notes we passed back and forth between the two of us. I practically felt like I knew her by the time we left!

When I can get service like that from someone so appreciative, it's money well spent!

Now that I agree with. I had the misfortune of staying in both of those a long time ago and never again! They were very dirty and nasty. At least the two we stayed at.

At the risk of being called " Uneducated" "Hick" and "Untraveled" as was implied the last time I posted that I tipped . I will go ahead and say .... Yes I tip and I tip everyday at least $5.00 . I see alot of people that say they never heard of tipping housekeeping . I had never heard of not tipping, I was raised traveling and like other posters I always saw my family tip and thought that is what everyone did. Tip not what you think you should but what you know you can afford. BTW I still tip the guys who take my HUGE suitecase to the room

I don't think you can judge a hotel just because they have a sign on US-192 from the AKL. Lots of dumpy hotels have signs everywhere. As far as Days Inn I have had only one experience with them and that was 2 years ago. We were driving to WDW and stopped over there. We made a reservation at this hotel because it had an indoor pool which by the way ate the sterling silver anklet off my mother's leg but that is another story! Anyway the room was just kind of crummy. Curtains were torn, bedspreads ripped, tile busted. We figured since we were only there for the night we would make due. And trying to find another hotel that late is next to impossible. So we get up and go the next morning and I'm driving down 95 and I feel something on my leg. I have on jeans so I have to pull up the jeans to see exactly what this strange feeling is. I pull up the jeans only to see this huge cockroach crawling up my leg! I am driving 70mph down 95 with this ugly nasty creature crawling up my leg. I scream and swat it off and attempt to stomp on him before he gets away. He runs under the seat! I can't pull over right there on the highway so I had to wait until the next exit to get out and look for him. I jump out and of course cannot find him. We look and look but this thing is hiding in my minivan. After a half hour of searching we give up. About an hour later this thing finds my mother's leg and proceeds to crawl up it. She screams and I almost wreck the van! LOL! Luckily she is not driving and can thoroughly stomp the life out of it and hopefully put an end to it. I guess we can get roaches at any hotel but I have NEVER seen a roach at any other hotel we have ever stayed at. Ever. I know it had to have come from this hotel as that was the first one of our trip and I know it didn't come from my house as we do not and never did have roaches. It came from that Days Inn. I'm sure you can't judge every Days Inn from one roach but it was enough for me. I will never stay in a Days Inn again. I'm with Anne. I'd rather sleep in my car then to stay in a Days Inn.

So which jobs are considered tipped positions and which are not? Obviously the wait staff at a sit down restaurant, but what about the doorman, bellman, housekeeping, valet, room service?

We always tip mousekeeping even though I understand others say it isn't a tipped position. I make the cute envelopes and have all the money divided out before we even get there so I won't forget to do it. There are 2 of us, so I tip $3-5 a day. I don't think it would affect your service at all, it's just personal opinion. I feel as many of the others have posted that they go way out of their way in the service they provide. Stuffed animals arranged, towel animals, etc are all part of the service that they don't HAVE to provide but choose to.

I've always considered housekeeping to be a tipping service. Both in Europe and in the States.

I also consider Bellman (not unloading the car at check-in, but the ones that take your bags to the room), Valet and Room Service to be entitled too.

Disney is the only US resort I've ever seen that suggests that housekeeping is not a tipped position.

I'm from the NE and we tip everywhere. Mailmen, garbagemen, doormen... all get tips at Christmas. Housekeeping, porters, valets....all get tips in hotels. Waiters, hairdressers, shoe shine guys, delivery guys....all get tips. If they do a service for you, they get tipped. About the only place tipping is not de rigour is in a fast food restaurant/takeout situation and tip cups are starting to appear in those places (which for some reason rubs me the wrong way and I have yet to tip in that situation).

Absolutely! We leave an envelope everyday since you don't always get the same maid each day. A little bit of kindness goes a long way!!
