Hey everyone,
we have a minivan on hold that we are suppose to rent from dollar. We are suppose to pick it up on the day of arrival at 3pm and return it at 3pm on the last day. However, our return flight isnt until 730pm so we dont want to sit in the airport for 4 1/2 hrs so what is the leeway policy for returning the vehicle? I thought someone mentioned 1 hr so if thats the case- what will they charge us if we bring it back 2 hrs later- for 1 hr or 2? and how much??
THANKS

Most rental car companies give you an hour. However, if you bring it back outside of the hour they start counting late time from the orignal due time. So in your case you would be charged for two hours.

I suggest asking Dollar then what their policy is. I haven't heard of any of the companies giving that amount of time to a renter but I suppose it is possible.

From the Dollar web site

Rental Rates: Daily Rental rates are based on a 24 hour “rental day” starting at the time of rental. The minimum charge is one day, plus mileage, if applicable. You will pay for each hour and/or any part of an hour in excess of a rental day until the Vehicle is returned, up to the applicable daily rate. Mileage charges, if applicable, will be the number of miles driven as determined by the odometer readings at the beginning and end of the rental. If you fail to comply with the conditions applicable to the rate, including any geographic driving restrictions, a mileage charge, surcharge or other rates may apply. Weekend and weekly rates often reflect a savings over daily rates; however, returning a weekend or weekly rental early may not result in a proportionate refund. Additional days beyond the weekend or weekly rate plan may be charged at the extra day rate published on the rental agreement.

I am just asking because I read on mousesavers.com that budget gives you 21/2 hrs as a leeway

Not really. She says you can go 2 1/2 hours before you're charged for an extra day, she doesn't say you can go 2 1/2 hours without paying extra.

Budget's website says you get a 59 minute grace period, after that you're charged an hourly rate and after 3 hours you pay for a full day. Other agencies charge you for a full day after 2 hours.

Play with the return time and see how much extra it will cost. I think I'd pay the extra $$$ rather than have to spend the extra time in the airport.

From the Budget website

Do late-return fees apply?
Vehicles are rented on a daily, 24-hour basis beginning at your pick-up time. There is a 59-minute grace period for returns. After one hour, hourly charges may apply. After three hours, a full-day charge may apply.
