I got a chance to find our video. I am sorry I said we were there in 2009 but it was 2007. Wow time sure flies!
But other than that, my memory was good! The Flag Retreat started at 5PM. The Town Square was roped off before that & there were cast members surrounding the square, blocking the enterances. There was a podium, the red white & blue flower arrangements on the ground & a small riser for the chorus. The flag was also at half staff all day.
An announcer welcomed the crowd to this "very special flag retreat ceremony".
The Voices of Liberty from Epcot sang "This Land is Your Land" & Proud To Be An American". The MK Marching Band played "America The Beautiful" & "My Country Tis of Thee".
The announcer talked about Walt Disney World & the nation recognizing Patriot's Day. He mentioned the events of Sept 11th & asked for a moment of silence. (I don't know if everthing stopped in the whole park, but they did all around town square.) He went on to talk about honoring the memory of those lost & that we reflect on the events of that day. He also spoke about reflecting on the meaning & ideals of our nation.
Next he introduced an Honorary Color Guard from the Orlando Navy Operational Support Center & the Retired Chaplain (a WDW guest) assisting in the Flag Ceremony. And asked to honor & remember all Armed Forces, Police, Fire & EMTs for there daily sacrifices.
The Marching Band played The Star Spangled Banner and the crowd, chorus & band sang God Bless America as the flag was lowered. And the ceremony concluded with the recessional. The whole thing was about 25 mins.
Thanks so much for the detailed info! This sounds like a very tasteful and moving way to acknowledge the day for those who choose to do so. I plan on being there for the flag ceremony in Sept. (even if they don't repeat the above events I think it would be a nice thing to do). I might also try and ask a few CM's about the flag ceremony/any other events when I'm there, but like you said, I'm sure it's not something everyone is aware of.
Oh, and I think I first started seeing the "Patriot's Day" title back in...'03 or '04 on calendars and the like. I never hear hear people refer to it as such though.
