Does Disney Cruise Line Have Plans to Purchase Abandoned Cruise Ship?

I'm actually surprised about the 6 funnels. The 2 in the middle line up with the Global Dream's design, so the forward & aft funnels are the fake ones. Because of the split-hull design this already has limite3d deck space. They are taking up a lot of room with those funnels.

As for pools, don't forget this ship has a pool area on the back lower deck...possibly an adult area?

They could be creating rooms in the funnels similar to the Disney Wish funnel suite. Or adult only venues.

Now they have to name it.
In terms of a name, if it truly IS an Asian ship, I could imagine Mulan being the statue and having a name like Disney Journey or something like that.

People are speculating where this ship might sail from or it's home port. I once read that Disney has an agreement with Port Canaveral that all new ships will home port there first. Not sure if this is true but I think every ship has home ported there first.

Very interesting move. I'm glad to see Disney continue to expand. Hopefully they will add new destinations and ports as the fleet grows. Even after Disney's makeover, it's pretty darn ugly, but hopefully it will be a great ship when they are done.

This is kind of what I'm afraid of. If this ship is incredible, its certainly going to be difficult to go on it as often as I can other Disney cruises. I've always been very curious as to what a large ship like this would be like for Disney.

There is no speculating on it being based out of the US. Disney specifically mentioned this in its press release. Now whether that changes or whether it sails out of the US part of the time or moves here eventually is a different story.

So much for Disney making a more fun like ship like Icon of the seas announcement ...

For what it’s worth, the original German report from earlier today (that came before the announcement) indicated it would be designed for the western cruise industry.

Totally possible it’s inaccurate since DCL didn’t specify in the announcement, but they’ve been right about everything up to this point. If it’s not going to Asia or the US, I guess that leaves Europe? But where does it go in the winter? Even from the official announcement, it seems abundantly clear that this is not going to be geared towards Americans. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re taking a page from those Magic at Sea cruises and much of the itineraries this ship does are cruises to nowhere.

I would expect that Disney will design the ship for a Western-style cruising experience even if they base it in Asia. All of the Disney hotels in Asia (Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Shanghai) are western-style hotels. I imagine it's what people are looking for from the Disney brand.

The concept art is really interesting, I hope they can get the design close to the existing fleet because the original designs look really ugly. Looks like a lot of white wall verandas to simulate the curves of the DCL ships.

So just because Disney says the ship will be "based outside the US", I wouldn't consider that etched in stone. Royal built the Wonder of the Seas specifically for China...and now it's sailing out of Canaveral. Even if they intend this to be overseas, it will make it's way to the US at some point. Or perhaps Europe...nothing specifically says it will be Asia.
Same with the Norwegian Joy. It was built for the China market and two years after setting sail NCL did a $50M retrofit for the 'western' market and now it sails from North America.

I am betting Asia (Shanghai & Hong Kong & Tokyo). Different (huge) market than DCL has served previously, but it's time.

Figure the Wonder will go back across the Pacific in 2024, and will test China and maybe Japan. That will be the first step. This ship will be the 2nd.

I would absolutely do a 3 park cruise. Would be an amazing once in a lifetime trip.

I would like to point out in the annoucement there is no mention if the Casino stays or goes. One of the things I love about cruising Disney is the family atmosphere, no gambling. So I will be watching closely to see if the thirst for greater profits will trump the traditional Disney values.

"reimagined under the world-renowned expertise of Walt Disney Imagineers and is expected to set sail in 2025."
"addition of this ship will make a Disney Cruise Line vacation accessible to more families than ever before,"

No mention of lot's of stuff, but they clearly are making this a DCL ship and still are focused on family experiences. I think the only way Disney would have kept a Casino, would be a new brand and look.

As for where it will sail from... a lot might depend on what ports are planning to have facilities for distribution of "green methanol" by 2025. I expect that the Global Dream was going to be a traditional marine oil burner, which wouldn't work with Disney's environmental friendly plans. It would have likly been too big of a redesign, to change to LNG like most newer ships, as the fuel storage and engines are very different. Methanol is something several lines are looking at for their existing fleets, in order to meet newer environmental requirements. It isn't nearly as hard to convert too as it is a liquid fuel. But it's one of several alternative fuels being considered for shipping . How many fuel options can ports afford to offer?

Norwegian Cruise Line chose not to jump on the LNG band wagon... they are just now planning for their experimenting with dual-fuel options of diesels/methanol. They would use diesel while cruising, but use methanol while docked. Most likly due to methanol greatly reducing fuel economy or how far a ship can sail per gallon of fuel... and it's much higher costs at this point.

Anyway... what ports are planning to offer Methanol in 2025? Or will Disney end up having to dual fuel it as well?

I really wonder how they are going to make 6 funnels work. I found an overhead image of the ship and drew where the existing funnels are, and where the ship is open to the air below. Unless they are planning on moving the existing 2 funnels, I just don't see how this works. The existing funnels are too far back to be the middle 2, and too far forward to be the back 2.

I wonder if the Methanol will count as zero emissions for places like Norway that will no longer allow any cruise ships that aren't zero emissions starting somewhere around 2025? If so, there is a strong chance for it to head there.

I think existing funnels stay, two funnels possibly added to almost the far back of the top deck there, basically rubbing up against the edge of the deck. These could be suite rooms. and then two at the front of that top deck where the water slides start. That would be my guess.
