Does Disney Cruise Line Have Plans to Purchase Abandoned Cruise Ship?

I must just love searching random German websites....another article, not much new info:

According to this article, the contract has been signed and the press conference will be on Thursday. They should also determine how many of the 900 employees will remain on at this press conference.

The ship will lose the amusement park and casino, and the parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

Meyer-Werft will finish the build at Wismar
I get ditching the Casino, but it's Disney, they should keep the amusement park.

Well this answers the capacity question:

"The 208,000-gross-ton ship is expected to be among the first in the cruise industry to be fueled by green methanol, one of the lowest emission fuels available. Disney Cruise Line expects the passenger capacity to be approximately 6,000 with around 2,300 crew members."

After Disney retrofits this ship, it wont hold anywhere near 9,000 people. It is slightly smaller than an Oasis class ship, and those touch 6,000 when completely full. The 9,000 number is assuming every cabin on the ship has 4-5 people in it. Never going to happen.

I bet when Disney is done with this, it's official capacity will be in the 5000ish range.
Press release indicates somewhere around 6000 people. However, it seems like they are basing it outside the US. I'm imagine Asia at this point.

Yeah that's... not a thing.

Disney will have to report this in their quarterly financials.
They will have to disclose the overall financials, but may not indicate how much they bought the hull for vs money invested to retrofit.

Either way, I expect they got a steal on the hull.

Pricing will be very interesting to see. Asia cruise market prefers shorter 3-4 day cruises and to use RCL as an example. Cruises start at $268 a person for a 4 night cruise and that is for the newer Spectrum of the Seas. Will definitely have to price it competitively to continuously fill it.

Assuming they send it to Asia. I think Europe is a better bet.

So just because Disney says the ship will be "based outside the US", I wouldn't consider that etched in stone. Royal built the Wonder of the Seas specifically for China...and now it's sailing out of Canaveral. Even if they intend this to be overseas, it will make it's way to the US at some point. Or perhaps Europe...nothing specifically says it will be Asia.

It says specifically "new markets" I'm not sure where in Europe would be considered a new market. Asia seems like the only major market they haven't hit yet. Plans can obviously change, but the ship was already built for Asia and the press release specifically mentioning new market seems to indicate Asia to me. Could be wrong.

To add to what I said above D'Amaro said "Our cruise ships give us the unique opportunity to bring Disney magic to fans no matter where they are, and the addition of this ship will make a Disney Cruise Line vacation accessible to more families than ever before" He can certainly be talking the size of the ship, but this once again seems to indicate Asia.

It was a rather looking tacky amusement park & water park. That would have taken up a good portion of the deck space. But yeah it looks like a lot of fun, and I'm sure with some better color choices it might have been more appropriate for THE Disney look.

But then this ship is going to be for new global destinations... so maybe catching some rays up on deck won't be as big a part of the cruising experience as sailing the Caribbean?

Perhaps the most surprising part is this reportedly won't change the plans for the other new ships. This will be the 8th DCL ship.
It will be interesting to see if it changes anything for the third Triton class ship, since that is scheduled delivery of 2025.

I'd imagine the plan is to continue the deck parties, and the look of that doesn't seem to leave much room for on deck firework viewing and top deck parties. I could see them turning the amusement area into something like that with some mickey shaped pools.

I'm actually surprised about the 6 funnels. The 2 in the middle line up with the Global Dream's design, so the forward & aft funnels are the fake ones. Because of the split-hull design this already has limite3d deck space. They are taking up a lot of room with those funnels.

As for pools, don't forget this ship has a pool area on the back lower deck...possibly an adult area?
