Does Disney Close Pools If It's Too Cold?

I find it funny that SAB closed for a while on 12/11/04 because that was my DS BD and we were at AKL swimming that night! (BTW, the lifeguard was only wearing a t-shirt and shorts at 8:00 pm) It really wasn't that cold that day (in the high 60's). I kept a journal of our trip at it only got down to 49 that night (weather.com can confirm this), and that wasn't until after midnight. We were at AKL from 12/6-12/12 and the first time we had to wear pants instead of shorts was the 12th. It was in the 80's almost the whole week, so you never know!

All the pools were closed at dusk because of mosquitos. No swim at your own risk, CLOSED. It was awful because it was an off season and none of the parks were open past 7 pm. There was nothing for the kids to do that weren't in hotels with lots of activities. Got old walking around DTD everynight with the kids.

ps None of us got bit and being from the south didn't even think they were even bothersome.

That would be a closing due to Encephalitis concerns.

Sammie, I understand why, but I felt like they dropped the ball in not making other options for entertainment available. I think lots of people look forward to a swim after all day at the parks.

I have been there when overnight they decided to extend hours, according to them "unexpected larger crowds". Even just an extra hour would have made a difference. Bottom line I felt like we were safer in a chorinated pool than walking around all those lakes in the evenings.

SAB is not allowed to be open if there are not lifeguards on duty. With the weather getting as cold as it was there is a safety issue for the lifeguards as well. It wouldn't be good for all the lifeguards to turn ill and then no one can watch the water the next day b/c then no one would be able to swim. I don't know if this is Disney's call or law or what but they are also not allowed to have the pools open it it gets to a certain temperature. It was 50 degrees not too long ago but now i believe that it is 40 degrees with a wind chill.

Heated water or not i still think you're insane to want to swim when its that cold outside

We went to lunch at Beaches and Cream on 12/26/04. The air temperature was approximately 40 degrees with a wind chill of probably 30.

SAB was definitely closed. I spoke with the head guard. They are not sent home, they are provided other duties, so WDW isn't saving anything on their salary.

This is true.... Whenever a pool closes for any reason the guards aren't sent home right away, they are provided with other activities. This mainly includes Inservice Training which they have to complete a certain amount of hours every month in order to stay on active duty. Only after that if it is still too cold to reopen will some if not all will be allowed to go home.

I've been there when the water park was closed (jsu tone was open, the other being refurbished) because of the temperatures.

It sure was cold last week (people were steaming when they got out of the water), but that didn't stop the kids form swimming. Parents looked a little funny in heavy coats, though watching the kids. The joke usually is..hey you guys must be from the north!

Just back from our trip and wanted to say that despite some pretty cold temperatures (mid 30's), people were still in the pools close to midnight! Water was heated so in the pool was fine; look out when you get out, though! Like DMRick said, lots of steam coming off the water and off the people, too, when they step out. A quick run back to the room and hop right in a hot shower. My kids still had a blast.
