I was so excited for my ressies at Beirgarten until one of my gfs told me she can't take the smell of sauerkraut. There are 5 of us traveling together and everyone is real excited about eating there (except her). Can I tell her not to worry or should I change our ADRs? I love sauerkraut so the smell doesn't bother me. Is there anyone that is like her, and doesnt mind eating there?

I am just back from WDW. We ate at Biergarten's, and in my opinion - yes - it did smell like sauerkraut. It had a heavy German food smell - the cabbage smell was overwhelming to me. My husband wasn't bothered by it. Since I had kids, my sense of smell has become so keen I could smell things stronger than ever.

This is my own opinion - take it for what it's worth. I'm sure you'll get tons more!

Maybe you could bring her into the restaurant quickly to see if the smell offends her? It would be a shame for all of you to have to miss a meal.

Good luck.

Ask her to put a bit of Vicks Vapour rub under her nose, she won't smell it then :rotfl:
I also detest the smell ofit but I wouldn't let my friends miss out on eating her just because of me. I would have to look at ways round the smell.

not that i noticed however sometimes if you think you are gong to smell something you will ( had a freind that hated peanuts and smelled them everywhere she went:))

You can actually smell it outside as you approach. I don't like the smell but I've eaten there and it was OK.

I can't stand the smell of it either...but my wife loves German food, so we have an ADR here in Oct. Fortunately, I really get into German style shows, so I will just suck it up and try to focus on the show..oh yeah, and eat plenty of brats

I didn't smell anything weird. Maybe I'm aromally challenged. Or maybe I was having so much fun I didn't notice. :earboy2:

if you go will you post about the smell...maybe my olfactory system is saurkraut deficient since many do smell it (or i'm just used to it although i don't think my house smells like used shorts/saurkraut)

Have to answer this one. Last New Year's Day, we had eight of us to celebrate my husband's and my 23rd wedding anniversary. I thought long and hard about what restaurant would please everyone. We had picky eaters, meat lovers, veggies, and seven adults and one six year old. That was my loving granddaughter. I picked the Biergarten for the fun and being able to have all eight of us at one table plus a buffet.

Just a few weeks before the trip, my daughter-in-law informs me that the granddaughter hates the smell of sauerkraut. Would that be a concern? Oh crap, now what to do? Go on with the reservation because it was special for my husband and me.

The granddaughter entered, sniffed, made a big deal out of it, and then said in her best grown up voice "this isn't so bad". She had the time of her life there that night.

Yeah, you will smell it approaching the restaurant but that's because the outdoor place reeks of it. Once you get inside and are sitting down, no big deal and we were very aware of it for the granddaughter.

actually i wonder if what they smell outside is sommerst since that is right there and more open ( really good brats and sauerkraut there ummmm)

I think they pipe out the smell of the sauerkraut to the courtyard to draw everyone in. ;)

Seriously, I don't think it smelled like sauerkraut inside...maybe beer? :confused3

yep beer was the smell( smelled just like grandpa...he owned a brewery, can't get much more german than that!)

I would worry more about the smell AFTER you eat there.... :earseek:

OMG...You will pray for the smell of saurkraut...

Thanks for the great replies. I am going to forward my gf this thread so maybe she will feel better about going.

There are 5 of us staying in one room! Maybe I should cancel :rotfl:

Had to answer this one! DD and I needed to use a restroom and we were going by Germany, so I asked if we could use the restroom in Beirgarten. The smell of the place practically knocked me out! I don't know if it was because it was such a steamy day or what, but I wouldn't want to eat there.

Maybe you get used to the smell after a while - but maybe not!

So true! One of my close friends HATES the smell of peanut butter (but not peanuts, go figure) and she swears someone is eating a Reese's peanut butter cup somehwere near her all the time!! :rotfl2:
