Does Apple offer idiot warranties?

I bought DH an Ipod touch on December 21st for Christmas. Today he decides to wash it with his work clothes. Needless to say it is ruined any idiot waranties on Apple products? I've tried calling the tech support line but am having difficulties getting through to a human.

I hate to say it but you are probably out of luck. My DD had a brand new ipod touch she took to WDW in August one year. She didn't drop it in the pool or carry it in the rain... it literally was so humid that it triggered the internal sensor that tells the Apple tech it was water damage, and they just said, "Sorry, we will not warranty any water damage".

Craziest thing I had ever seen, humidity damage.... go figure!

Hey...this week i washed 2, yes 2 ipods at our house(a day apart)...thankfully it wasnt any of our touches, but i did wash a shuffle and a nano...threw them both in rice for 3 days without turning them on, and they both work...Now i got lucky, but it is possible but is important to NOT turn them on immediately...you have to let them dry out...good luck...

Yeah I just called a regular store and pretty much outta luck I am trying the rice trick and hoping that will work? Anyone else have any tips or tricks in case the rice doesn't?

I have heard that trick of putting in stuff in rice might work.

You might check w/your insurance company... it might be too late on this one, but in the future you might be able to put some of that stuff on your insurance. I put my macbook on the policy.

I feel your pain Jakoky he is now on his 3rd cell phone in a year. Just last week I upgraded mine and gave him my old one because he just washed his cell At this point I told him he doesn't deserve a new one.

I did try to turn it on once and I am sure DH did too. Apple told me don't do that again I'm hoping it'll dry out and work.

I know it's hard but you must stop yourselves from hitting the "on" button in the future! I have four kids and stuff has been washed over the years, most survived because my kids know to leave it off for several days and pray .

You can always sell it on Ebay as damaged and As Is. It is amazing at what people will pay for a damaged Ipod. When you replace this one purchase a square trade warranty from square trade.com. After you apply a 30% discount code that you can usually always find online, it will cost you about $27.00 for a warranty to cover these kind of accidents for 3 years. With devices of this nature, it is almost certain that at some point they are going be involved in an accident. Square trade is the only place to offer the accidental part of the coverage. My daughter dropped her Ipod touch on the pavement at church right in front of my eyes. I watched as she was devasted at the shattered glass front. I told her to chill and to be thankful that her mom had taken the accidental coverage on it. Within a week she was carrying around the new generation of the Ipod touch. Square trade deposited the $205.00 for a new one in my paypal account just as soon as I faxed in my receipt from the old one. Don't take a chance. Accidents like this will happen. You have 90 days from date of purchase to warranty an item. I wish you luck with this one. Maybe it will dry out.

Check with the credit card that you purchased the iPod with. Maybe there is some kind of insurance? Some credit cards do that.

A friend of mine dropped her son's brand new i touch Christmas day and it shattered. She was so upset. She had to replace it the next day.

I don't know if you have heard of these or not but we purchased a case for my sons called "Otter box". Anyway, they are supposed to be water proof & if they are dropped, it's supposed to protect it. I bought it online at otterbox.com, and googled for a coupon that saved me 10% & free shipping, so it ended up costing me 35.00. They are 40.00 at the mall. It just came today.

squaretrade.com offers extended warranties that cover accidental damage. If you buy the item new, from a store you can buy the warranty as late as 90 days after your purchase of the item. The only catch is that accidental damage from handling coverage does not kick in until 30 days after the purchase of the warranty.

I'm not a big fan of extended warranties but I love squaretrade for my electronics. My son's iphone was less than a year old when the power button stopped working right. He took it to an Apple store to have them fix it (as should have been covered under the one year manufacturer's warranty). They refused. They said that this kind of damage only happens from dropping and we didn't have the extra apple coverage. I had bought a squaretrade warranty. Squaretrade paid to ship the phone both ways and we had it back in less than a week! There's a $50 deductible for phones but other electronics don't have one. That iphone would have cost me $700 to replace without a contract renewal so the $50 and original cost of the warranty were well worth it.

I'm not sure if you can buy the warranty on the ipod touch and then wait 30 days to make a water damage claim. It might be worth looking into since the warranty would be so much less than paying for a new ipod.

Not sure where you see the irony. I said that I'm not sure whether you can do it or not. I didn't say lie about it or try to pass off a damaged electronic piece that was purchased "as is". I told the OP to look into it. Just what is so wrong with that? If she can't do it, well at least she tried. You have a problem with that?!!!

Another one who used the rice trick successfully after I dropped it in a bowl of water at the sink! We changed the rice daily to pull the maximum amount of water out. Worked great! Good luck with yours!

My ipod touch went thru the wash too. Then like a moron i turned it on. After it dried out it still would work on a dock but would not hold a charge. I was able to buy a car charger, which i needed anyway for my other ipod that came with a battery that u attach to the touch so i just use that.
Hopefully you will be able to salvage yours somehow too.

Another suggestion which worked for a cell phone that went thru the wash cycle: 1) don't turn the unit on and remove the battery and 2) put it in a plastic bag with the small bags of crystals you get from a box of new shoes. These crystals remove moisture from the shoes and work well in removing moisture from electronics as well. We kept the phone in the bag for 24 hours and it worked! Good Luck.
