Does Anyone Vacation Any Where Beside Disney

Although Disney is my favorite, we are planning a trip to Hawaii for next March. (This will be my fourth time there, 1st time to Oahu though). Most of my vacations have involved Disney (land or World), but someday I would like to branch out (I've pretty much been a west coast traveler except for my visits to WDW) and visit New York, Washington DC, Miami, Las Vegas, certain parts of Europe, etc. My DH has been TONS of places- his parents were school teachers & every summer they would go somewhere fun- I think he's been to 48 out of 50 states, Mexico several times, Europe once, Japan/Philippines/Singapore with the military, Canada, etc.

PS- When DH was in Japan.....he went to Tokyo Disneyland! That was in 1991, so things have changed, but still! I can't believe he has been to 3 of the 4 resorts and I'm supposedly the Disney NUT!!!! :p

I just started planning our February trip, yes it's to Disney 5 nights at WL then over to Cocoa Beach for 5 more nights.

The trip that I'm excited about happens in less then 6 weeks. We will be visiting Italy for 2 weeks. Lunigiana Region of Northern Tuscany, Siena, Rome, Florence and Venice.

Our big trip each year is to Disney. We also spend weekends down the shore. I have to honestly say that Disney is still my favorite place to vacation. It offers so much! We will also visit Universal this trip and stay there too. For now, Disney ranks number one in our family!;)

Williamsburg, VA at least twice a year if not more. We don't do Bush Gardens, or the water park. And we don't do Jamestown or other historic areas. Just Williamsburg. We have made friends with Willy and Robin. Willy runs the printing press below the Dubois Grocery store where Robin works. If any of y'all ever go. I highly recomend staying at The Brickhouse Tavern. The Rooms are small. But it is so colonial.

When I first discovered the DIS Boards, DH and I thought it was hysterical that so many here go to WDW EVERY YEAR! Long story short, we are planning our 5th and 6th trips to WDW. We really tried to plan a NON-Disney vacation, but just couldn't do it.

Since I really love traveling, we do other places besides WDW, but many tend to be amusement park related , ie. Hershey Park, PA, Busch Gardens Williamsburg. We also like Cape Hatteras, NC. We usually try to vary trips. One trip will be amusement park, commando style, next trip, laid back beach bunnies!! WDW is our favorite, and we now try to fit in it every couple of years. (which is why I am surprising my 6 yo DD with a weekend trip in January! She is my excuse, the trip is really for ME!!!)

We’ve only been to WDW once, back in ’98, and are going again Feb 2004. I love WDW and would have liked to gone once or twice more but I stay abreast of Disney and help friends and co-workers plan their trips. BUT…

and I can’t believe I’m posting this on this board

our favorite travel spot is the Outer Banks, NC (and in particular, Duck, NC…just got back a week ago). If you love the beach and a relaxing time, this place can’t be beat. Plus, we go with two other families on our street as we have become very close friends and all of our kids are around the same age. Boy, these kids are spoiled…get to spend an entire week of their vacation with their best friends.

Of course we do other trips as well: NYC, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Hershey Park, hopefully heading to Cedar Point soon.

Where are you in Western NY, Zman? We live in East Amherst..

I had to laugh when I saw this post. My husband and I just got back from a trip to England to visit his family and do some touristy stuff for me. After 2 days with his family, he turned to me at dinner and said "Well, I think to make up for this trip, we'll have to go to WDW within the next few months." Everyone at the table just laughed at the way I perked right up!

So...to make up for my trip to England (where I was thrilled to go and had a terrific time!), I get to go to WDW! No wonder I love this guy!

I'm not one who really gets much out of so-called "relaxing" vacations, so WDW or Vegas are really the ideal spots for me. I don't mind relaxing long weekends, but get bored and drive my wife nuts after about 3 days. Now that we have a 3yo son, it gives us lots of reasons to go back. She is trying to convince me (and doing a good job) of going to Maui in about a year and a half for our 10 year anniversary. Growing up, we always rented a cabin for a week on a lake in the Traverse City area, and I did enjoy that so were planning that when my son gets a little older and he can fish and do some other outdoor activities with me. We usually head "up north" now for a couple of long weekends every year either to TC or Mackinaw Island. Besides WDW and Vegas, I've gone to Key West and a couple of Colorado snowboarding trips in the past couple of years, but WDW is definately my favorite.

We have done Disney every other year since 97, with the other years being less expensive vacations. I always feel on the other years that I'm looking to get that one out of the way so I can start planning my WDW vacation. I have a feeling my next Disney trip will be more than years away though sadly. My son starts college in 2 years and that'll put a major money crunch on us. Fortunately we got an absurdly low rate at the YC due to POFQ closing so our trip this year will hold great memories until the next trip....

Paul......we also have been to the Outer Banks 3-4 times the last 4 years. We have stayed in Duck,Corrolla,Pine Island, etc.

It is a very relaxing place to be.We just do not prefer it as much anymore because of the limited choices of entertainment and restraunts. We usually get a 7-8 BR house and have about 20 family members get together for the week. The young kids do enjoy having there own private pool and ocean very close by.

yes! LOL! There are so many places I want to try but for some reason everytime it's time to make a decision I always fall back on my favorites - Disney, Vegas and NYC.

Let's see..I have been to New york,Dallas,California(San Francisco,Napa,Los Angeles),Calgary,Philadelphia,Washington DC,Hershey Park,Miami,Naples,St Augustine,Ft Myers,Tampa,Key West,Costa Rica,Argentina,Colombia,Venezuela,
Dominican Republic,Tortola,St Thomas,St Croix,St Marteen,St Lucia,Barbados and Aruba. We have taken 2 non Disney cruises. We have also been to London,Paris and in one month we are going to Finland,Sweden and Norway for 11 days(had to cancel our trip to Disney :( )Wow, I didn't even know I had been to so many places  Yet,my favorite vacations so far have been Argentina,Napa,San Francisco and my all time favorite DISNEY!!! ;) My mom used to work for an airline and I work part time for an airline,so, staying home during vacation has never been and will never be an option :p

We go to WDW once or twice a year but take other trips as well. I always go to San Diego once each year and my husband is Mr. I've Already Been There so we try a new place once a year. I must say that there is no place that offers everything that I love as much as WDW. I love the resorts and the parks, the landscaping and restaurants. I love to walk for hours on end. I think I could spend 2 weeks there and never get on an attraction and still be happy.

Diane,
When I read your post title, I had to laugh. It would appear from reading these boards that people only vacation at Disney.

We go about every 3 to 4 years:
1. Because we can't afford to go more often than that
2. Because I really like to see other things
3. It keeps Disney magical for us by not overloading on it

Just an opinion:cool:

I have been attempting to go to Disney at least once per year but most of the time it is stretched to every third year. I do believe in visiting other parts of the country. This year has been a beach vacation in Alabama & FL panhandle as well as Disney. Last year was Central America and Disney. The year before that beach vacation and cruise to East Carribean. Next year, I am thinking Tennessee, S. Carolina, SanDestin or Washington D.C. The only way I will be back at Disney next year would be if I could do a very cheap 5 day vacation for less than $1,000.

DH & I run our own business, so we rarely get a "real" vacation, just weekend & day things, but we have managed some vacations:

Before business:

Hawaii & Kauai (Honeymoon) :p
Seattle/Victoria/Vancouver (saw family in Seattle)
non DCL cruise to Mexico (weekend trip)

Kids & business came at the same time, so we do lots of weekend & day trip things here in California:

Lake Tahoe
Reno
Las Vegas (mixed with work)
Monterey Bay
Santa Cruz beaches
Marine World (amusement park w/animals)
Yosemite
various parks in the Santa Cruz mountains
DL
Legoland (lately my kids have prefered this over DL)
San Diego Zoo
Sea World San Diego
(we have family in S. Cal.)

Mixing business with family pleasure: :bounce:

Last year we got to go on a European cruise (England to Spain) (not DCL)
This year, we are adding WDW to a Caribbean cruise (not DCL)

Wish list:

Grand Canyon
NYC
Yellow Stone
Hawaii with the kids
Dakotas
Boston
DC
Alaska cruise
The rest of the world....

awatt, I also love the Breakers in Palm Beach!!! Wow what a place, huh??

We have also been on other trips, Palm Springs on business (side trip to DL!); San Francisco; Yosemite National Park; Chicago; New York City; Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons; San Antonio; Acadia National Park in Maine; and the Great Smoky Mountains.

Before kids, we loved nature/hiking type vacations; now with little ones Disney seems the logical choice. And now that we've been several times, DH and I are both hooked!! We're going back in September for FTP...I would love to do a cruise (not necessarily Disney) and Hawaii some day!
