Does anyone remember the game show, Supermarket Sweep???

Oh ya! Good show. There was another on that took place in a mall that was on about the same time. I can't think of the name of it, but I LOVED that one too.

I too remember both Supermarket Sweep and Press Your Luck. No whammy, no whammy, stop!

I always thought it would be cool to be on SS. My only issue was why did these people on there fill their carts with big box items like toilet paper and cereal?

I know it's been a long time, but wasn't the idea to get the highest amount in order to win??
If it were me, I would've gone for the big ticket priced items that were smaller, like good cuts of meat and medicines, vitamins and such.

Anyways, this is one of my first posts to this board. I'm looking forward to getting to know my fellow Disney lovers!!!

Welcome Tracy to the DIS! Sending pixie dust your way.

SS was like Fun House for adults.

When I was a kid they filmed this show at a food store near my house in Bound Brook New jersey. I remember at the commercial break they let us kids eat the ice cream that they used for an advertisement. It was alot of fun almost being on television!

I was confused about your post because I clearly remember the show taking place in what appeared to be a stuido. So I looked up the show on Wikipedia.

You must be talking about ABC's Supermarket Sweep which aired from 1965-1967. It was filmed mostly in Food Fair supermarkets around NYC.

The one I watched from Lifetime was filmed at Hollywood Center Studios in a mock supermarket and ran from 1990-1995. The host was David Ruprecht.

There was also a version from PAX that ran from 2000-2003 and it was also taped in a studio.

I'm glad I looked up the article. I learned so much. Did you know that there was a Canadian version that is still shown in re-runs on GameTV?

I remember that one too. Was it called Shop till ya drop, or something like that??????? I know what you are talking about!! If they won the challenge they got to pick one of the stores, and got whatever prize was at that store.

I used to LOVE that show!! As a matter of fact...my DH and went to Vegas back in June and went to THE PRICE IS RIGHT live on stage and the guy that hosted SUPERMARKET SWEEP was the host of TPIR. Both dh and I got up to contestants row and got tshirts...we then had our picture taken with the host and rest of the crew. Here is the picture.

I remember watching that show with my mom when I was younger. I remember wanting to be on that show someday.

::yes:: Me too.

I watch the Game Show Network all the time, but I haven't seen it on there.

used to was Supermarket Sweep every night at 6 - loved it!!!

but i also remember watching the B&W version in the early 60s on TV (filmed in Food Fair Supermarkets)

went to the Museum of TV and Radio in NYC a few years ago and watched an old 60s clip of this original version there!

Yes! That was it!!

It was a fun show! Did you check the Game Show Network? Everything seems to end up there eventually.

What I remember most about Supermarket Sweep was the Vortman cookies. I never got why people wasted their time picking them up with tongs and putting them in little bags.

My girls would be ecstatic if they showed this again in reruns. We still talk about it occasionally. If memory serves correctly, each team had to get from memory, a list of like 4 different cookies or bagels to get extra points. So thats why they wasted their time at the Vortman cookie display. I worked in a grocery store as a teenager and we had the same display. Haven't seem one in years though.
I would love for this show to come back! :lmao:

The PAX network usually shows it. I'm not sure if all markets get PAX or if the network is gone now.

Supermarket sweep used to bug me because they would lug about 5-10 huge hams or huge beef things on there... I had babies at the time and I'd yell at the TV "go for the formula and diapers!"

I had a strategy going as well.

We still have a cookie display like the Vortman one from the show in our supermarkets.

I was on the show! Yes I have the honor of losing on Supermarket Sweep. :lmao:

It was a blast to do. My best friend and I had a strategy but we couldn't answer the questions fast enough to get the time to shop. When we tried out for the show we had the highest score that day. Go figure.
We ended up with tennis rackets. :)

Hey, at least you got on, nuke!

I tried out for SS and Shop til You Drop. And Family Feud. Didn't make any of them.

My strategy would be to just start and put five of everything in the cart (the limit), no racing around to waste time. And yeah, the ones who went for the formula and the diapers tended to do well. And the medicines.

That is very cool, Nuke! Glad you had a fun time! The footage doesn't happen to be posted online anywhere, does it?

Yep...PAX showed "Supermarket Sweep" and "Shop till you Drop" back to back on weekday evenings.....my DH and I used to watch them.

The host of "Supermarket Sweep", David Ruprecht was Janets' boyfriend/future husband on "Three's Company"....anyone remember that?

hahaha OMG I remember that show! In fact my sisters and I would use our play food and have our own "Supermarket Sweep" in our house. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I remember watching the show back in the 90s and wanted ot be on the show so badly! Like most I had a strategy. Hit the meats, coffee, baby items, and medicine. If extra time hit the garden hoses and large cans of anything, lol. Plus I would grab any bonus items along the way. It would be great if they brought it back. It was corny and family friendly...wait maybe that's why its not around? I've yet to see that or Shop Till You Drop on GSN.
