I recently bought a Canon S95 camera after doing much research and I can't stand the pictures I'm getting. The indoor shots are dull and blury and the outdoor shots are dull.

I wonder if anyone out there has one they love, can you tell me what I might be doing wrong?! Thanks!!

I decided to keep it and learn more about it. Can anyone tell me a good, easy access camera case for the S95? Thanks!

You'll probably need to post some photos here if you want people to help figure it out.

Mine NEVER show color like that. I do use it mainly in Auto mode and my pictures are as dull as can be. Here are a couple examples I took yesterday in my living room.

See how it's making my husband's tee look funny/textured, it's not.

I'm not an expert on P&S cameras by any means. But the shots you posted were mostly indoors without a flash. And the one outdoor shot you posted was a very backlit setting. I'm not surprised it had some trouble. Are you using the camera on auto or setting anything yourself (at least ISO)?

The other poster posted mostly outdoor shots. The one indoor shot wasn't of a person. So it's hard to compare.

For one thing, your photos are all backlit, meaning the light coming from behind your subject is overpowering the light in front of your subject. You camera on auto, wants to meter/read the strong light in the back. Therefore, your subjects are dark. Using a flash will help fill in the light in front (yes even on a sunny day outside, I use a fill flash to reduce shadows on my subjects). The other thing you could do is focus on your subject, press the shutter half way down so the camera can meter the light there and adjust itself, then continue to push the shutter all the way down to take the picture.

Your shots are a bit blurry too. Again, the flash will help with that. Try taking your camera off auto, and set it to P mode (program). It is like auto, but you can adjust a few things like ISO, and aperture. If you don't want to use flash, this will help. ISO is your "film" speed. You would use 100 on a sunny day, and move up from there depending on your lighting. However, the higher you go, the more "noise" will show up. Noise makes the photo look grainy. Most cameras these days handle noise much better than they used to, so you could push the ISO. If you use post processing software (ie Photoshop), you can also remove this noise to some extent.

The best place you start to learn about your camera is its manual. From there, search the boards as there a tons of advice on settings, etc. Check out your library or book store on basic photography as well. Look into your local community college or rec center as well as many offer basic photography classes. I basically taught myself that way, starting at a basic camera and working my way up to a dslr (GASP! I was really scared about that move). A few years ago I took a photo certification course at the local college and gained so much from it.

I agree with everyone above. There is a lot of noise in your pix.Take the camera off auto and watch your lighting and ISO. I have a 7D with an s95 as back-up. Most of the time, It's hard to note any IQ difference between the two.

In other words Fall, similar to what we talked about in the other thread. The s95 excels, when you "take control of it."

Maybe some SD owners can speak about use of the AUTO mode on SD. Perhaps it defaults to faster shutter speeds better than the s95. I'm not sure.

Exactly. Thats what I love about the s95. It can be a fully auto p and s or you can call all the shots. The most important thing I learned from the excellent book, "Understanding Exposure." is that the camara can not read your mind. If you use auto, it will do what it has to do to get an "averaged" picture even if it means an ISO of 1600 or more, a slow shutter speed, or a wide apeture. So you have to watch out. If you use Auto, at least look at the settings that the camera is choosing before taking the picture. Even as good as the s95 is, if the camera picks an ISO of 3200, you will have some noise.

Is there a "manual" mode on the s95 where you can set your own aperture and shutter?

Another thing to note. SDxxx cameras don't give you Av or Tv modes. If you learn shutter speed (Tv), then that one Tv mode on the s95 replaces (and does a lot better job) than all these "easy" modes on the SD:

Portrait
• Night Snapshot
• Kids & Pets
• Indoor
• Smart Shutter
(Smile, Wink Self-Timer, FaceSelf-Timer)
• Fireworks
• Long Shutter

And the rest of the modes can be replaced by understanding exposure.

I was at WDW last week and had my Powershot SD850 IS with me....wow it was so hard to set! I'm not used to shooting with a point & shoot. I know that sounds weird but it's true! I'm so used to my DSLR that I get lost on a P & S. :confused3

I am looking at either the s95 or G12 right now as something to carry around with ease of use similar to a DSLR.

No, it's not weird at all. :) P&S menus are a nightmare on most models if your used to some level of control.

You'll be happy to know that I can set everything on my s95 as fast as on my 450D. Those twin dials are amazing. The G12 should be even better with more dials (exp and ISO).

I have both and it mainly comes down to size. There are a few other differences. The G12 has a flash mount where the s95 does not. The s95 can go down to f2.0 where the G12 goes to f2.8. Both are great cameras. Decide what you need. You can't go wrong with either.

Someone was advertising a pretty good deal on an S95 bundle the other day.

I think it was bradsdeals.com, but it was a few days back (you'd have to scroll back through all the pages to get to the link).

Edit: it's from beach camera. A case, 8gb sd card, S95, and tripod for $359 with the BRADSDEAL20 code.

A vote for the G12. I have the G11 as my carry-all-the-time camera. It's as close to my dslr as I can get, and yet it is still too slow for my taste (spoiled by the dslr). I don't know anything about the S95, but the G12 let's you control just about everything.

Okay I am leaning more towards the G12 for more user control.

I shoot weddings for a living so by bringing my DSLR with me on vacations still feels like "work" to me. I don't want to be reminded of work with all that gear. :goodvibes
