I made two dinner res for the same day just in case we find ourselves running late, or if we feel like eating at our backup restaurant. Is this okay?

Well, technically it's fine...but you are taking up a space that someone else may get shut out of.

As soon as you know where you will be eating you should cancel the one you are not using.

This can be a hotly debated topic, so be careful!!

Actually, if you double book the CM's may cancel both reservations. WHen I called to make reservations for my June trip I changed a Brown Derby lunch from 1pm to 11:30. The CM I talked to forgot/or didn't completely cancel the 1:00 so it looked as if I was double booked. Thankfully I called later and found out when the CM said my number had been highlighted because I was double booked and my reservations were going to be cancelled! I don't know if it was because it was at the same restaurant of what but I wouldn't do it.

The same thing happened to me only it was caused by a mix up with my TA and who was booking what. The CM also told me my reservations would have been cancelled. I was glad I happened to call to make yet another change. Who knows if they would have actually cancelled them but the CM said they would.

Sure, one can have multiple reservations for the same evening, as long as they are at different times. If any cast member complains, simply explain that one is for dinner and the other is for desert, or that you like to eat two small meals with time between them.

It is polite to cancel if you know you are not going to use one or more of your reservations.

I have made two ADRs for the same day/time when our party is splitting up (grandparents and kids to one place and adults to another) and have never had the cancellation problem.

That being said, please don't double book for the reasons stated (running later or just changed your mind). Both of those things are completely within your control. It is not fair to others to tie up two ADR's when you know you are not going to use one of them.

Is it possible to double book ADRs? Yes, obviously, since you said you did successfully.

Is it an "ok" thing to do (to other Disney visitors), NO! Kind of selfish, actually. IMHO, of course.

OP, hope you have a flame-resistent suit:firefight
As far as my opinion, I think you should decide on just 1/meal -- regardless of whether the system doesn't notice or does notice and cancels both.

Another vote here for you cancelling one of the ADR's. I have been unable to get ADR's at times and you could be keeping someone else from having their ADR request fulfilled!

In my opinion, booking two reservations when you know you are only going to use one is inconsiderate and a major violation of "Disney ettiquette". If a majority of Disney guests did what you suggest, it would be total chaos.

If enough people overbook, the inevitable response by Disney will be to start to require credit card confirmations and/or penalty charges, which will hurt everyone.

A CM told me that they are no longer allowed to book two reservations for the same dining period. I think maybe it's become a problem and they're trying to cut back on no-shows? :confused3 So I don't know if the dinner/dessert tactic would work anymore.
