laying along side and in the roads?

Do people just decide they don't want them?

Do people have them in the back of trucks and they fall out?

Is there a shoe fairy sprinkling shoes every so often for people in need?

Are there people stealing other peoples shoes just to decorate the roads?

I like those shoes you see tied up hanging across electrical wires or telephone wires. How do they get up there?

ever notice there is just ONE shoe on the side of the road? why not a pair?

I always wonder where the other shoe is.

I've always wondered that as well. Seems like they would notice that they lost one. It reminds me of crickets. You come across a cricket leg and the cricket is no where around. Why would it leave it's leg behind? I think I getting a headache. Too deep!

Well, I can answer the 'sneakers on wires' question. In certain cities, it is a tradition to throw your old sneakers over the wires when you get a new pair. This was much more common in the 70's, I hardly see it anymore. When we were kids we couldn't wait until the end of school and a new pair of sneakers for the summer. You knew that you were finally one of the 'big kids' when you could get your old ones over the wires on the first try.

I've seen some really nice, new looking shoes up there.

Unfortunately, the shoes over the wire are often a signal for illegal activity, usually drug sales. I used to see that a lot and wonder what the deal was; when the cops got wise to the shoes on the wire signal, I stopped seeing shoes over the wires.

Oh, and as for why there are only single shoes alongside the highways, we are just waiting for the other shoe to drop. :p

We have plenty of shoes over the wires around here. :earseek: Yup, ours look new too, Serena.

I didn't used to be. That is a shame, that they had to take a nice innocent tradition and turn it into something nasty.
As far as the new shoes, well, there was always that one kid in the neighborhood who got his new shoes ripped off his feet and tossed up there. I never took part in that, too mean-spirited.

How about those single socks in the gutters of the streets???????

I saw an entire OUTFIT in the gutter the other day - men's jeans, flannel shirt, undershirt, and boxers :earseek: College towns...

Back in the 70's it WAS a big thing to throw your sneakers over the wire when you outgrew them. At least in our neighborhood it was!

I think throwing a shoe (or two) out of a moving car is the ultimate revenge on a shoe that's been giving you a blister or is just downright uncomfortable to wear!

Here, take that you damned shoe! Let's see you walk home now!

I find lots of single socks in my clothes drier. I always wondered where the other sock went - guess they ran off to a life in the gutter.

Apparently there is a lot of fun to be had along side the roads. :earseek:  :earseek:

I don't question it. I just say, "Hey, free shoe!"
