"Chien que pete, joie sur ma tete."

I understand the word for word translation, but does anyone know of its meaning?

Thanks!

I'm curious, too.

The only thing that I found is that it's an old saying used primarily in the North of France. And that it translates to "A dog who farts, warms my heart."

Oh, that's an even better translation than the ones i've seen. It makes a lot more sense now.

I have never heard that. It is not one we use around here. It seems to be like an old wives tale. When a dog farts, my heart warms (it brings warmth to my head)

ETA It should be chien QUI pete

 I used to work with someone that had that on a sign in their office and I never took the time to read it. I just saw dog and joy and figured it was something sappy.

Ya gotta love the French! :rotfl:

I'm thinking "joie sur ma tete", which translates directly as "joy on my head" is a french phrase meaning warms the heart?

I'll check with my husband when he gets up from his nap, he's from the Nord/Pas-de-Calais region of France. I'm pretty sure they use the phrase in A Very Long Engagement.

DH says the movie is the only place he's heard it and the movie is supposed to be in the western (Brittany) part of France. It's not a phrase he's ever heard used in the north. I'll have him ask my MIL next time he talks to her, she and my FIL have never really left the Pas-de-Calais, still live within 30 minutes of where they were born! Maybe they've heard it.

I am no expert at French but I think it means

We Surrender

So flipping original, you never get tired of it do you? Everytime someone asks about the French, says something about the French you chime in with surrender. Grow up already.

Actually Sarkozy is making progress. He has introduced a proposal to shut down some of the white flag factories. ;)

Sarkozy is wacked out egomaniac, second only to our current president.

I love the ignorance on the dis, Fox news is the only source of information. :lmao:

Back to the OP - we haven't had a chance to talk to MIL about the phrase, DD has been hospitalized since Tuesday and will be here for a few more days so when we talk to her it's not about this!

Interesting, since the majority of DIS members seem to be liberals who despise Fox news...

Either way, a farting dog bringing joy has got to be one of the funniest phrases I have ever heard in any language. ;)

Freetranslation.com gave me this "Dog that pete, joy on my tete" and there is "Dog that pete, joy on my head"
