DIS Veteran Needs to learn how to ride a lawnmower

DH & I were talking about the rides and how recently a few movies were made of them. For example, Pirates of the Caribbean 
(Johnny Depp) and Haunted Mansion 
(Eddie Murphy). My thinking is that the rides were built based on some sort of story or childhood fable. DH seems to think the rides existed first and then the movie. Anyone know for sure?
