Does anyone know the difference between a Motel and a Hotel?

If I understand correctly, a motel has doors that open to an exterior hallway/toward the parking lots. A hotel has doors that open to interior hallways.

I always thought the difference was a motel was one where you parked you car right outside you room and there was no inside hallway, just a entrance to your room from outside. Where as hotel was one with inside corriders. :confused3

I found this for you:

There really is none. The term "motel" is derived from the term "motor hotel," which originally meant that the hotel provided parking (ca. 1950s). The term motel today generally is used for a "limited service" property (i.e., a hotel that provides a limited number of amenities and does not provide food service).

In a motel each door is on the outside of the building. Usually there is an office that you check in at.
In a hotel there is a lobby and the rooms are usually in the interior of the building. Some people feel more comfortable in hotels and safer for that reason. Hope this helps.

Usually a Motel you drive up to your room and there are no hallways. Your room opens to the outdoors.
A Hotel you park in a huge parking lot and go inside and down a hallways and the rooms do not open to the outdoors.

See, you learn something new everyday! I thought that this was the difference, and now I know! Thanks! :thumbsup2

From Wikipedia:

Hotels differ from motels in that most motels have drive-up, exterior entrances to the rooms, while hotels tend to have interior entrances to the rooms, which has been asserted by some hotels as enhancing guests' safety and presenting a more upscale image.

So far all posters are correct..finally Motel usually refer to smaller places as well(rarely are they larger than 50 rooms). I am a former Motel owner, and it was started as a motorist destination and had exterior halls/doors.

Motels are mainly located on highways, state or interstate roads meant to be easily accessed by travelers who need a rest place during there trip, and as was said the service is limited if non.

All I can say with absolute certainty, is that when I stay at a motel, there is always somebody else parked in front of my door!

So by that definition what are the moderate resorts at Disney? They seem nicer than a motel to me, yet they have exterior entrances to the rooms.

A motel is where you have the option of paying for a 4 hour stay :lmao: pirate:

Ok, while we're on the subject, what the heck is the defination of a bed and breakfast?

To me Motels are the ones that are scary, Hotels are the ones that feal safe, and resorts are the ones at disney! I suppose resorts are at other locations, but why would I choose to stay somewhere other than disney!? :teeth:

A B&B is someone's home. You usually get a bedroom and a bathroom. Sometimes a sitting area. And the whole place is then served breakfast in the dining room of the house. Although, I've never done that. I've stayed in two. In one, we were served breakfast (by the hostess) in our room. The other one, my family rented out the whole place and we all had breakfast together in one of the suites.
