Our little mini dachshund is sick, and I'm pretty sure she has a fever. :sad1: I don't know what to do for her. Does anyone know if you can give a dog tylenol or advil?

Does your vet have emergency hours? If they do, I would call them and ask. I wouldn't give them anything for humans without checking first.

You can give them baby aspirin on 1/2 of adult 81 mg aspirin.

The only reason I know is my puppy was in pain after she was spayed and my vet said I could give that to her

Thanks for the quick replies. We live in a rural area and don't have an after hours vet but I don't think we're at that point yet. She just doesn't feel good and I think if we could give her something for tonight she'll be o.k. until tomorrow. I do have an 81mg aspirin, maybe I'll try that.

I "think" aspirin is a better choice, but I'm not a vet.

You cannot give a dog Tylenol or Advil, but you can give them baby Asprin.

Please, do not give your dog Tylenol or Advil, these pain relievers can kill them!

You can not give a dog Tylenol. We got a handy reference guide from a Dr. Fosters and Smith catalog. It states that Tylenol is not recommended. Aspirin is definitely your best bet. Just make sure it is buffered.

Hi
I know that dogs cannot have Advil. I think my dog has had aspirin in the past, but I'm not sure. If you call the vet, even if it's after hours, don't they have someone on call for emergencies? Then you could be sure about the aspirin. Hope your dog is feeling a lot better by tomorrow.

O.k. I will definitely not give the tylenol or advil. I haven't given her anything yet, I'm kinda afraid to. I'll just see how things go. As a mom of three, she feels like my fourth baby ya know?

Yes, my aunt is a vet...NO TYLENOL!!!!!! ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! She's actually turned a family in for being inhumane, because they kept giving their dog tylenol and then he got really really sick, so they brought them to her...she told them not to give him tylenol ever again, and they brought him back for THE SAME REASON two more times!!!!

asprin is about the only human med. that she will recommend...but go by the dogs weight, because they can OD on that as well.

1/4 of a 325 milligram tablet per 10 pounds twice a day is the vet recommended amount...that's what my aunt has told me anyways!

I wouldn't give a dog ANYTHING without being seen by a vet first! You have no way of knowing what is wrong with her, or even if she HAS a fever, without taking her temp.

Please get her into a vet tomorrow if she's not feeling better.

I don't know what was wrong last night but today she seems fine, back to her old self thank goodness! I didn't give her anything, I was too afraid I would hurt her. But thanks for all of your help. :flower3:

DOn't forget dosages can be different based on the size of the dog. We used to give my dog some pepto bismal when she was having trouble digesting her food (that's the nicest way I can say it...) But we had a very specific amount to give her...though most of it wound up around her mouth and turned her white fur pink!! ;)

Maybe she just had a little "bug". They do get them like we do once in a while, and we get so concerned because they can't talk to us.

Thank goodness your baby is OK. :)
