I'm thinking of taking the kids up there to go camping. Anybody from around there or have vacationed there? I'd really appreciate any advice! :thumbsup2

It's a beautiful.area and extremely busy in the summer.

My best advice is to make reservations.

There are a couple state parks and lots of private campgrounds. We like the parks better.

Like the previous poster said, Door County can get crowded.

I'm not too sure about the private campgrounds because we only camp at state parks. The most popular state park there is Peninsula. We are not particularly fond of going there in the summer; not so much due to the crowds but because the swimming is not great at Peninsula. However, it is a beautiful park and has some great biking and fun activities. If you use ReserveAmerica, you should be able to find a site.

Also, Door County has had some problems over the last couple of years with high ecoli levels at some of their public beaches on the Green Bay side. That being said, we love going to Door County in the early fall. Still crowded but we do not have to worry about the swimming issue.

Thanks both of you! We don't want to go too far but far enough to know we are out of Iowa. We like to be on the water. Hey, I hear there might be a lake or two in Minnesota ;) :rotfl:

Just a few key things and you’ll have a lock on it:

1. It swings both ways.

2. Things can quickly come unhinged.

3. You'll likely encounter lots of Avon Ladies, Girl Scouts, retired Watkins salesmen, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons and Jim Morrison fans hanging around.

(Not to mention, there’s a lot that goes on behind closed… well, you know. ;))

Always letting too many people past the WELCOME mat. ::yes::

I grew up there and am actually heading that way this summer for 2 weeks, yes it does get crowded especially in July. It seems most of the visitors are from Illinois and it has become touristy but it is a beautiful area. Our house was right on Lake Michigan and I still find this side to be more beautiful although the water is colder. There is also a state Park in Sturgeon Bay (Potawatami) and several private ones ...Quietwoods and I believe Jellystone. Most people gravitate north of Sturgeon Bay.....Fish Creek, Sister Bay and Ephraim. IMO it is still the Cape Cod of the Midwest and still worth the visit. Any questions feel free to PM me.

We actually own a lot up in Door County and love it up there! :thumbsup2 Here is a link to our campground. It’s not on the water, but it does have a nice pool and water slides, which the kids would like. If you are interested in staying there, we could get you a cheaper rate for a site as a guest of ours!

There is always something going on in the summer. Check out the calendar of events and see what you would like to do. A nice trip to take is to go to Washington Island by either taking the car ferry out of Northport, or the passenger ferry out of Gills Rock. They have a train tour that will take you around the island and visit an ostrich farm!
Here are a few websites for you to look at. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me! :sunny:

We stayed in Fish Creek a couple of years ago. There is a nice state park there with a lighthouse you can tour. Fish Creek is also home to the White Gull Inn which has incredible food and a fish boil (Door County tradition). Here's the link to the inn: http://www.whitegullinn.com/
