I'm only asking because I watched a documentary about polygamy the other day, and it said that it's practiced in 38 states, not just Utah and Arizona, which many people believe.

I do not know of any polygamist families in my area. Do you?:confused3

No I don't but I wish my DH would get a couple extra wives to cook, clean take care of the kids, and some that work too :)

Funny thing, I do actually know one.

One of my best friends from high school joined up with a group called the "Hebrew Isrealites"

She's married to a man who already had a wife. They all live together in the same house. She refers to the other wife as her "sister wife" and she has a sister like relationship with the other woman.

I asked her last time I saw her if she was happy in her situation and she said she wouldn't be able to take it if her husband decided to bring home another wife. So it doesn't sound like she's totally happy with what's going on.

Wow - you see, it must be true then. Plural marriage really is everywhere.

I don't know any but, then I don't think they would be telling everyone that they are. I don't think they would want to get busted for it. I'm sure they would keep it pretty hidden like on the show Big Love on HBO.

Well, I haven't met any polygamists in Buffalo :rotfl:

But if you live in Prince Georges County, MD you've got a population there that you may not know about.

Hmmmm... OK, well, the call is out now - anyone know polygamists in Buffalo? If there are, give me an address, I want to meet these people.;)

Here in Mexico, although they would never call it that, or openly admit to it, many, many men have more than one wife (and I don't mean just having a mistress on the side - they have lots of them as well). In fact they often have more than one whole family I know quite a few men that have two complete seperate families that they support. Often times the names of the kids in each of the seperate families are the same (I guess it helps the louse remember the names without mixing them up). So to answer your question, yes, I do know quite a few polygamists.

Wow, must be a little crazy at holiday get-togethers - "Hey Fred, please pass the gravy." And four or five sets of hands reach for the stupid gravy bowl.:lmao:

Normally they try to make sure that family A and family B never know of each other. But there is one funny story our doctor told us. A man died (great start, huh?), at his funeral, unknown to each other, both of the man's families came. When the minister asked Mrs. so and so to come foward, both of the ladies did. He then said, excuse me, I mean Mrs. Lydia so and so, both of the ladies still came forward. The poor minister tried to figure out who the real guy's wife was, only to find out that they both were. Interestingly enough, they were both names Lydia (or something like that) and they both had four kids named Juan, Pedro, Eva and Simone (or again, something like that). You can just imgane how much fun that funeral must have been.

I love it.:rotfl:

I think that unless you belonged to their church or group, it would be very unlikely that you would know that they were polygamists. They keep it very quiet as a general rule.

Most of them live in very rural areas; it is much harder to hide it in cities. I used to work on a research project involving groups with unusual political beliefs, and I know where quite a few enclaves are within the US.

There are also some who are immigrants from countries where polygamy is legal; the Malian family that lost several children in a NYC fire a few months ago is polygamist.

Not known anyone who was married to more than one person but known several who were in relationships with multiple (knowledgeable, consenting) partners - worked for them :confused3

Do the Polyamorous count?

I was covering for a co-worker during his vaction and using his computer when I noticed some the file names on his desktop. Found out later that they were not simply for research.

I find the whole concept very creepy, but I wonder if it should really be illegal. If they aren't marrying off underage girls and that kind of thing. If it's between consenting adults, I wonder why it's really illegal.

OT, sorry. I just never really thought about this before.

I find it creepy too. And I'm a big fan of "Big Love" on HBO - I guess creepy things intrigue me sometimes.;)

BTW, my cousin recently moved to Utah and the family joke is that he moved there to become a polygamist. So far, I think he still only has one wife. But I haven't seen him in a while.:rotfl:

:rotfl: :lmao: Well, there's a way to not confuse one family with the other. At least you won't run into the "honey, my name is BETTY, not Lydia"

I know an LDS family that I'm pretty sure is polygamous. They introduce the second wife as his "cousin," but it's pretty dubious. Before I hear from the LDS types that the modern LDS church doesn't allow polygamy during one's lifetime, I know this. I don't think they tell anybody, but they do attend the church.
