Most US carriers offer a prepaid option, but there are several things to keep in mind. Frequencies are different here, so make sure you check that your phone supports all the LTE bands for the carrier you choose.

The best deal for data is probably the T-Mobile $30 SIM that is only available at Wal-Mart. For that price, you get unlimited data (first 5GB at faster speeds), unlimited text messages, and 100 voice minutes. http://www.walmart.com/ip/T-Mobile-Complete-SIM-Kit/39081494 has more details. Wal-Mart also sells other prepaid SIMs (including AT&T) as well.

I'm not familiar with requirements for T-Mobile to set up an account for foreigners, but you can pay your bill with a prepaid card to avoid credit card related issues and I suspect you'd have no problems using your hotel address as your billing address...

Make sure your mobile phone is unlocked before coming to the US - you will may need a code from your mobile provider if you purchased your phone through them.

Look on the Canadian board and you will see a thread about this. I'm thinking it's a stickey. Now, some of it won't apply to you, but there are other ideas of how Canadians get around the roaming fees.

If you need it to call home, could you just install Skype or similar and make calls on your normal phone that way?
