Does anyone here still use traveller's cheques?

I'm local, so I don't worry about money at DL. I only go one day at a time. But if I'm traveling out of state and will be gone for awhile, I use them because I don't use charge chards for everything, and I don't like to carry a bunch of money.

I still use them when travelling.:cool2: I was a victom of credit card fraud a few years ago while traveling so I make it a point not to use cc when traving or anytime really.:upsidedow

I use travellers cheques everytime I go to Disneyland. They aren't that inconvenient and you get cash back so that helps with the small purchases. The only problems I've run into are young cashiers who don't know what they are, then they have to run and ask the manager, then they double and triple check your signature. But other than those few I never have any problems and I don't have to worry if my wallet is stolen.

This doesn't make much sense. Anything can be stolen and used by someone else....Travelers checks are fine also but they do invovle more hassle in getting them and using them but don't give you any additional protection vs. Credit Cards. The great thing about Credit Cards is that you don't lose anything, you don't carry any of the risk, the merchant that accepts the fraudulent purchasse does.

Plus they are easily replaceable in an emergency. Amex sent me one via overnight mail, for free.

Cash is the worst thing to carry (security-wise), debit cards next.

traveller's cheques are accept at all locations even at carts outdoors...

BUT, make sure they are in US dollars... I think they would work great since you can use one to cash it at anywhere and use the rest of the cash for that day...

like what the previous posters says, You can always get a replacement for it quickly... just make sure you sign one of the lines and sign the other line in front of the CM.

Up until our August trip, I would have said Travellers Cheques. But now I am beginning to wonder... The Hampton Inn we stayed in while in San Diego gave us such a hard time cashing a $50 cheque. The airport gift shop in San Diego initially refused to cash one - I was apalled!:scared1: An airport not cashing a traveller's cheque. After some checking, he finally did but I was dying of embarrassment withthe line of people growing behind me.

Since I'm from Canada, debit would add up and would be costly. Next time, credit cards!:upsidedow

I use travlers checks everythime I go to Disneyland. I have had no problems with them. I did at pp have a young person take my driver lic to the manager because he didnt believe that I live in North Pole

Been through there, Nice Town! (also been to Sitka!)

If you are worried about credit Card fraud. A lot of CC companies offer pre-paid amounts of CC's Mastercard, Visa, Discover Etc. (we give them to our adult kids for Christmas, so they can get what they want!!) you could get several in various amounts, then use one at a time. I believe they expire when you use them up, and cannot add money. Just a thought....

ALSO you can buy them with YOUR credit card, and there is no connection to that when using the pre-paid!!

The only TC that should cause any extra "wait" time is if you use a $500 TC (or higher).

I use these all the time when I go on vacation. It hink you can get ones that are like credit cards now, but I always use the checks.

Please remember two things:

1) when counter-signing the TC in front of the cashier, please don't sign where is says "pay to the order of." Beleive me, after being in retail since 1985, I have seen this done.....do that and you get to take it home with you, since it's made payable to you.....
2) please don't use a $100 TC (or bill for that matter) for a small sale first thing in the morning. Every retail place I worked has a certain level of cash in the drawer - and we aren't talking amounts like $1,000. Please keep that in mind.

Thanks! popcorn::
