Does anyone have vasovagal syncope or convulsive syncope?

I was wondering if anyone else has either of these conditions. I have a long history with fainting. It all started back when I was 5 years old. All it takes is the right triggers to be activated. For me it's hungry, hot, & nervous. VOILA…instant nap. I’m in my 30’s now and my last episode was a little scarier than usual. :scared: The other day all 3 triggers collided at the precise time. The good thing about it was that I fainted in the hospital during my wife’s checkup. I fainted then went into a seizure for the first time. My wife said I was unconscious for at least a minute and I was convulsing. Well, to make a long story short, I recovered fine. After an EKG and butt load of tests, the neurologists said my “vasovagal syncope” manifested itself into “convulsive syncope”. “ Convulsive syncope” is a disorder in which the brain reacts to the temporary deprivation of blood and oxygen which occurs during a faint by generating brief seizure activity. Thankfully this is a benign condition and does not suggest that epilepsy will develop at any point in the future. Today I am currently undergoing other tests such as EEG and ECO among others just to be safe.

Am I the only one out there with this condition?

Nope...my 9yodd has it. So not alone. She has had 1 episode of a "convulsing" passing out, although the neurologist says that it is not a true seizure.

After a true seizure generally you are wiped out completely and this is not the case with my dd.

Here are some of the tips we have been given to help her.

1) Water...dehydration seems to be a link to aggravating this condition. Keep yourself well hydrated, esp. before getting blood drawn.

2) Have to control breathing and not hyperventilate.

3) Lying down when you have the option for medical procedures. She almost faints getting her blood pressure taken.

The Mystery Machine-
You're right those things do help. Thanks so much for those great tips. Please tell your DD that she's a rock star. :thumbsup2

My dsis has it. She has fainted 2 or 3 times and it is scary. I think hers is brought on by stress. One time, she fainted after our mom passed away and hit her face. I told her she was going to have to come up with something better than a bruised face if she was trying to avoid our mom's funeral. (OK, so I have a warped sense of humor :rotfl2:)

Oh mannnnnnnnnnnn...I'm sorry about your mother. :sad2: That's enough to make anyone faint. And no, you don't have a warped sense of humor. Humor can actually ease nerves during a crisis. While I was being transported from OB to ER by ambulance, which is at another campus, the paramedic jokingly said: “You had to steal the show. ha ha ha” (From my wife who is 6 weeks pregnant.) It helped at the time because we thought I was having a stroke. Thanks for sharing. :wave2:
