I've been looking for odd jobs around town, and it suddenly dawned on me that being a mystery shopper would be pretty sweet. Does anybody have any experience in it?

We call them 'secret shoppers' here and they are all hired specifically for the company they're shopping at.

It's mostly adults who need some extra money, etc. I don't think they would hire a teenager because of the stereotypes. You know, we don't pay attention, we're clueless, we'd blow it off. Etc.

Good luck though, it sounds like a ton of fun.

I havent done it but I've always thought it sounded fun. Good luck and if you decided to do it, give us an update and tell us how it goes.

What exactly is a 'mystery shopper'?

It's someone who is hired by a company to shop at a shop, eat at a restaurant, take a tour of an apartment, etc. and fill out paperwork about the experience. It's mainly to evaluate customer service and cleanliness.

Thanks for the responses.

We've done it before. If you have a lot of spare time it can be a good way to pick up some extra money, but if you are busy, it can be a lot of work for a little return. One thing to remember is to follow their instructions to a T. Make sure you dot your "i" s and cross your "t"s (metaphorically speaking of course ;) ) and that you fill out everything they ask for. Not doing so costs you your pay and maybe even your reimbursement. Plus it keeps you from being assigned other jobs.

We quit pretty fast as it seemed to be more hassle than worth $5. My brother did it for a long time though, His personality is the type that thrives on details and that type of stuff though.

I'd say give it a try once. Pick an easy job - maybe a fast food establishment - and if you like it, go from there!

According to the website you have to be 18 to be a secret shopper.

yeah, I use to work at Sonic Drive-In when i was about 15-16 and we would have
"mystery shoppers" evaluate our service weekly.. It was kind of neat because you never really knew who it was. the feedbacks were mostly always good. :)
I wouldn't mind being one.. and I think you get your meals free. I could be wrong though.
