Does anyone have DELTA SkyMiles CC?

I've had the Delta card for a couple of years now. Delta is one of the major carriers in our small airport, so I tend to use them a lot. The only real complaint I have about it is that the primary person on the card has to be traveling in order to get the free bags. My husband has his own card on my account, it's a joint card, and they don't consider him a primary, so I have to fight every single time he travels without me.

They want him to have his own card, which means he has to pay a separate yearly fee. It doesn't make any sense to me, but I fight it each and every time he travels. So far I've been successful in getting the bag fee refunded, but it's a major hassle and I always feel like they are trying to put one over on us.

I'm glad you posted this. DH and I are going down two different days this December (coming back same day). I had wondered about just this sort of thing. Good to know!

Thanks!

Do you know how long after you spent the 500$ requirement for your 30,000 points to post to your account?
I need to buy some tickets for our christmas trip ASAP:goodvibes

My husband just got another Delta card, I spend the remainder of the $1000 earlier this week. I just checked and he now has the 50000 miles in his account!

We have had the platinum card for years. I actually think it is easier to use now than it used to be. We traveled to DC in April and I was able to buy 3 tickets with mileage (actually found flights for 25,000), and use a companion certificate for the other 2 in the family. Our companion certificate is a free flight, you just pay the taxes. Grand total for all 5 of us to fly to DC was like $450. Since the mileage flights were booked seperate from the companion air, they hassled me in DC on the return trip about the free bags. DH has a card, and I have a card, but I guess he's the primary. Eventually, I won and they did not charge for the bags. Overall, we've been happy with our cards.

My husband and I had one for the last two years, but we just cancelled it. We didn't find it cost effective to use the companion fare the first year, so we were about to cancel and they offered to waive the next year's fee and give us another companion certificate. But every time we looked into using it, it was cheaper to fly other airlines even paying full price. Really aggravated us. We had much better luck with Southwest. Both of us got the 50,000 miles and have gotten free tickets to LA, Albuquerque and Seattle, for ourselves (LA and Seattle), my son and my mother (ABQ). Signed up for electricity through the SW card and got another 20,000 points. Definitely a great deal.

I think I have had this card for more than 5 years now. I have the business skymiles American Express card and only pay $40 a year so I have kept it, but I don't really use Delta Airlines often. For example, we're going to Disney in December, but when I was looking at airfare from D.C. it was about $350 something with one stop at Atlanta, Georgia. I bought Air Tran tickets for $153 each from D.C. straight to MCO. I do earn miles though because I usually spend $30,000 a year on the card, and I think they give me a bonus of 10,000 miles in December for spending more than 25,000 dollars I think. I also go online a lot and shop at Children's Place, Target, Home Shopping Network, QVC, Nordstrom, etc. You can rack up a lot of miles that way double points to 5 points per dollar. I bought a Pottery Barn Kids bedroom set for my kid, and racked up double points so I got an easy 3000 something points just for that. I thought you had to use the Am Express card, but when I read the fine print recently on the skymilesshopping.com website, it said you can use any credit card and rack up the miles, but you have to go through the site first, which will redirect you to the shopping site. So I manage to rack up 100,000 miles a year just from spending, but not through travel since I don't travel a lot through work or in general. However, the miles for free tickets is lousy and high. For instance I was looking at tickets to Miami and that is around 32,500 in December. So for the three of us in my family I would need 97,500 miles, and thus, I would have to really shop my tail off online and spend at least $30,000 a year just to get 3 free tickets to Miami or somewhere on the East Coast when you could easily buy 3 tickets from $150 to $275 each. I don't know why I have this card, just too lazy to do research on other mileage cards. Next year I will have 4 weeks of vacation, so one vacation I could get free airfare for one trip, but the rest I would probably buy non-Delta because Delta usually costs more than the other airlines out of DCA or Dulles Wash.

The most important thing to remember for the above poster is with the Delta CC, you can also elect to Pay With Miles. My last Vegas trip I would have had to pay 37,500 miles to go if I redeemed with miles. However using pay with miles I purchased a $289 ticket for the same flight & used 25,000 miles & paid about $50 out of pocket with the fee. Much better use of the miles!!!! I can hardly ever use the totally free as they always seem to start at 37,500 from MSP but pay with miles works like a dream.

When a co-worker decided last minute (day ahead) to travel with me we just checked in at the counter & they waived her bag fee also, even though we booked separately.

I do pay $99 a year but 3 of us took bags to Florida last year ($150 RT waived) and 4 will in January ($200 RT) - so I figure it at least offsets the cost of the card. Unfortunately I didn't get my companion certificate in time this year to pay for the January flight (but $243 pp RT was a great price).

I have used the $99 companion ticket the last two years, so this aspect of the card benefits can make it worth it.

I've had the delta card for close to a decade, and while we don't fly on delta so much anymore, I still keep the card active. My big complaint is the annual fee; I get better perks with other cards with no fee, but for the airline miles card, I guess the fee is the price you have to pay if that's the kind of reward you want.

I will say that we've used miles earned on the credit card to fly to Europe twice, Hawaii, and California a few times, so it's definitely been worth it for us, even with the fee....and since we primarily fly on Southwest these days (and have the Southwest card too), the free bag on Delta is a perk worth having as well since we're so used to not having bag fees on SW.

I just miss the days of Delta Song, and flying nonstop from Boston to Orlando for about $100. We raked in a TON of flights doing that...and we kicked butt on the in flight trivia LOL!

I have a quick question.....I have 2 flights coming up with Delta if I apply and get a card now will they still waive the bag fee since I didn't purchase flights with the card?

Yes, it should. I applied for the card about Three months after booking my flight and about three weeks before my flight. I had no problem getting the free bag. In fact, the bag fee was automatically waived because it was there when i did online checkin the day before my flight. Make sure you include your sky miles number on the credit card application.

I will probably cancel my card because been having trouble getting American Express apply the proper promotion to my account. They gave me less air miles than the promotion I signed up for offered. Their Customer service sucks.

I just redeemed my Free companion ticket (from Platinum card) for flight to Los Angeles over Christmas. Had no problem using it on non-stop flight out of Orlando.

However, I haven't been able to use my miles yet because it's so difficult finding flights out of Orlando using the 25k mileage award...have to be REAL flexible and even then it's tough.

Have you tried the pay with miles option? It's not a free flight but it takes at least $100 off, and you can use it for each ticket, not just 1.
