I have a red eared slider. I adopted it in March and it is still a little turtle. The place I got him from did not take good care of him and we have been battling with a shell disease. He is improving! I jusr wondered if anyone else has a turtle and what's your tank set up like? What do you feed it?

I used to have one when I was about 4. His name was Tommy and he was a very little turtle.

My Dad said he smelled. He took poor Tommy, wrapped him up in tin foil and took him for a ride on the Thruway.

I never saw Tommy again.:(

My Dad has since tried to make amends and has bought me a turtle statue. He wrapped it up in tin foil and put him in a gift box. Sorry Dad, it's not Tommy, and it's not the same.:(

Aww, you made me tear up. My little turtle (Fred) died 2 years ago this week. He was 32 years old. My parents found him in KY in 1970, and brought him back to MN with them.

He was a red eared slider, too.

The tank was all water, with some perches and rocks for him to get up on. He was fed minnows and lettuce. He got 4 dead, frozen and thawed minnows each Wed and Sun. And lettuce whenever during the week. I know that you are supposed to give the turtle a vitamin once in a while, but we didn't know that until he died. He started getting sick in early July, and passed 2 weeks later. Vet said the vitamin was crucial - wish we would have heard that 32 years ago...

I love turtles, hope to get another one someday. GOod luck with yours!

I love turtles!

I used to get those little green turtles from the dime store until they stopped selling them because they carried salmonella.

My childhood best friend's cousin found a big turtle (about 8 inches long shell) that had been painted with the slogan of the Navy at the time, "FLY NAVY", very cool paint job on his shell. That became his name and he went everywhere the cousin's family was, at home or the lake house. Very cool, he just walked around the house. Every once in a while, someone would say, "Where's Fly Navy?" and someone would locate him. It's not like he would run out of an open door!

Where I live there are box turtles everywhere, especially when it rains. They come out and walk across the road, so when I see one, I stop the car and get out to get it off the road. I either toss it into the woods, or take it in to the kids class to show every one. Then it's off to the small lake near our house to release into the wild again.

This doesn't help your question, but thanks for helping me relive a very pleasant memory. Fly Navy was the coolest pet I've ever seen.

I'm really weird..

My son wanted a turtle a couple of years back, so we got him a box turtle. He named him Homer. Homer was the VERY BEST pet! They don't smell OR make noise!! DS would get him out of the tank and he would walk around the house. Never any problem.

We had his tank set with a small area of water he could actually get into and then some landscaping of rocks and ledges.

He was really cool......then one day, Homer started acting strange.....real lethargic and poor turgor to his little turtle skin. Next day, I couldn't get Homer to come out of his shell. I thought Homer was dead, so I took him out back next to the woods and laid him down (my plans were to go back and bury him BEFORE the kids found him...).

WELL, Homer felt the free ground under his feet and I swear that turtle ran! He moved faster than any turtle I have ever seen!!! I didn't have the heart to catch him!!

So the kids wouldn't be upset, I told them the truth.........Homer ran away!!!

:confused3 :confused3 :confused3 :confused3 :confused3

My dad has a turtle that we have in an outside tank. He eats koi (carp) pellets and lettuce. This turtle has been alive for more then 40 years.
