I was just wondering what other people's opinion was of First USA or if I am the only one who thinks they are the most corrupt business I have ever encountered. I apologize in advance, this is loong! I have been going back and forth over the phone and in writing with them since December of 2003. In short, they sent one of those cardmember change notifications that needed to be responded to by 7/26/03 if you wished to opt out of the change. The change was increasing the apr up to 24.99%. If you closed the account, you could keep your current apr. Our account was closed anyway, so we just called the number provided to opt out and keep our rate of 10.99%. **(let me add..this account was always paid on time, it has been with First USA for over 7 years, closed for the last 3, and only other late payments on any account on credit report were on 2 accounts over 4 years ago.)** I noticed on the December 2003 statement that the finance charges were 2.5 times higher than what they should be. The interest rate was 24.99%. I called immediately and the cust. serv. rep. checked their records and saw that a call was made to opt out of the increase. She said no problem, she would send the request in to change it. Expect confirmation in two weeks. I thought that was the end of it, but no confirmation ever came. I called two weeks later and was told it was still being worked on. From then on I have been calling and faxing letters every three or four weeks. I kept getting told it actually takes 4 weeks, no new status, basically exuse after excuse. I finally got a supervisor on the phone about two weeks ago and he flat out told me that I missed the opt out deadline, there was never any request in to change it, and he was not changing the interest rate back. He did say that the change was because of an Experian credit report they ran. When I told him that I pull a credit report every year and know there is nothing on it to justify a 14% increase, he had no answer for me. When I asked him what all the other customer service reps have been doing with my calls from December until April, he just told me he did not know, he was not on those calls!!?? When I asked him how the very first person I spoke to was able to confirm she had record of our opt out and he could'nt he just said we missed it??? I would say he was rude, but unemotional and detached better describe him. I asked for his supervisor because I had not gone through this for over 4 months to accept his answer. He told me she was not available and would only leave a message to be returned within three business days. Surprise, surprise, that call never came.

Anyway, now I have written a letter to the CEO of First USA which I have sent certified mail. It details my entire complaint (5 pages). I did tell him in the letter if this is not resolved to my satisfaction I am filing complaints with the Office of Comptroller and Currency, the Federal Trade Commission, the Better Business Bureau of Delaware, and even the news program Dateline(you think that's a little over the top? )

I did some searching on the net and did find several complaint message boards about First USA. They apparently did the same thing to a lot of people (I'm sure the majority of people don't read the inserts that come in the bills).

To top it off, Friday we got another notice of change from First USA. Among the six things that will change is the minimum payment calculation will increase for aprs over 23% from 2% to 5% of the unpaid balance. I cannot believe this company.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience with them and if so, what if anything have you done? It seems to me that First USA is counting on people to not complain at all or to not take it any further than their robot customer service reps. It just really makes me angry the way the people who actually pay their bills get penalized. Our balance with them is only about $2,800 and when I figured the finance charges they will make if they assume they only get the minimum payment it goes from $1,600 to almost $14,000!! There are people who owe thousands more...imagine the finance charges they make on them!!

Thanks to anyone who has read this far, and I hope it's okay to post this here. I just think you guys are great and wanted to see what you thought!!:D

I know EXACTLY how you feel. Before I closed all of my credit card accounts, I always made sure that the payments were sent in a WEEK before they were due. First USA had a nasty problem of receiving my payment, but then not processing it for a few days (I checked on this several times). What did it for me was when I mailed in a payment a week and a half before it was due, and it wasn't POSTED to my account until 2 days after it was due! This made my intrest jump from 12.9% to 24% because the payment was LATE! I had sent it certified mail and could prove it got there in plenty of time, but they didn't care.

This is one of the many reasons why I do not use credit cards. First USA has always had nasty representatives anytime I talked to theym anyways.

I have one but we've only used it once or twice over the past couple of years. DH carries it when he travels internationally because he has had some problems with American Express in foreign countries.

It sounds like I need to cancel it. Didn't Bank One buy them recently?

I know my first usa card is now a bank one card that gets paid at bank one branch.

I've had a card with First USA since 1994. Never had any problems. Nearly 2 years ago I had some unauthorized charges on my account and they took care of the problem quickly and painlessly. They were bought by Bank One (recently-ish?) so just about 2 weeks ago, I called to close my original First USA card and combine the account limit with my Disney Visa (also Bank One) and it was simple. The customer service person couldn't have been nicer or more competent.

That being said, I'm so sorry to hear that you're going through this. What a nightmare! I hope that your letter gets some positive action!

Sorry to hear you're going through this. I had a First USA card for many years and never had a problem. I sometimes carried a balance, sometimes didn't. But I always mail payments to all bills about 2 weeks ahead so that "late posting" thing can't jump up and bite me! Good luck getting everything resolved! I had problems with a builder that ended up in court and the best thing I'd done was keep very good records...every phone call written down, every response, every letter, every name, etc. I won, of course, since the guy was a deadbeat....but might not have had a case if I hadn't kept good records. Make sure you follow through with your complaints up the chain if you get no response from the CEO, etc....

Good luck!

I had a First USA card for years and never noticed a problem. Glad I paid it off and closed it now though! I hope you get it resolved!

Why all the fuss? Just get a new credit card with a lower rate, and transfer the balance.

I had a First USA bank card, paid it off in full and canceled the card. 2 months later I get a phone call saying I owed $16.00. I told them it was paid in full and I have the paid recite. We went back and forth intill I agreed to pay the $16.00 over the phone and the $15.00 pay by phone convience fee so it would not go to a bill collector.

I then called the company for 2 months faxing them paid slips, 0 balances on my CC the whole 9 yards and they admited it was their mistake.
I then ask for my money back and they tell me " we only will send a check if the amount is over $20.oo !!!!

Never again with that company

Thank you very much for the info. I dont currently have a First USA card and now I know NEVER to get one. I am also going to pass this information on to others. I would have a heart attack over the late posting deal. That's horrible, they could ruin your credit doing that. I wish you luck.

No advice for you, but just another reason why I think credit cards are evil and I refuse to use them..

Keep on their case and DON'T let them get away with this!

For those that do have continuing problems with credit/mortgage companies, keep in mind, the USPS has certified mail which you can get a return receipt for, that not only proves when you mailed it, gives you a tracking number, and a hard copy that comes back to you showing when the company received it and who signed for it. These companies just LOVE to stiff people for higher charges citing late payments. Once you have the return receipt in hand, it negates any foolishness on their part. I know it costs $4.05 plus your postage right now, but it can be more than worth it compared to the late fees with higher interests rates they can/will come up with.
Good luck on your case. That's one reason I never make calls anymore for things like that. Too many cases of 'well we never got that call' for me!
Kim
Ps. Just won a court case against my former mortgage companies for just that reason. My hard copies of those return receipts made them look REAL STUPID!:)

:D I just wanted to give an update. I got a letter today from a customer service rep. at Bank One (which owns First USA). She apologized for the poor customer service we received and confirmed that the apr on our account was being changed back to the original 10.99%. She also confirmed that the additional finance charges would be credited back on our next statement. I just called the automated number to hear the balance and it looks like it has already been done! :)
So, I guess they really do read the mail they receive!

I have a First USA/Bank One card. I can't say it's any worse or any better than the others. In the world today, credit cards are a necessary evil. You just have to control them and not let them control you.

I have had a problem with the disney credit Card. I paid my balance in full back in November. At christmas I charged 21.00. sent in a payment for the full amount that for some reason didn't post until 3 weeks after I mailed it so it was considered late. I then got an letter stating that during their anual review of accounts they have decided to lower my credit limit. It was lowered to $103.00! I have called and they basically will do nothing. I have now closed the account and will not deal with them again. I am sure that if I still had my over 2,000.00 balance and was paying the finance charge on it that this would not have happened. I now only use the cards that I can pay directly on line or in person so I can not get this crap about being late.

Good for you! I'm glad they did the right thing and that it worked out in your favor! I've always found that it pays to write a calmly worded letter and send it via certified mail.
