my SIL and I were talking, she is a CareWorker for elderly people - and she said that quite a lot keep milk in the freezer for emergencies and if they cannot get out.

I just wondered if anyone else froze milk and if it defrosted ok? I imagined it to be watered down???

My parents do, and I can't tell any difference in the milk quality when I visit them. They use semi-skimmed; I'm not sure if other types behave the same way when they come out of the freezer.

Regards

Rob

We always freeze milk - we put a couple of 4 pint containers in the freezer after the weekly shop (semi-skimmed).

The defrost OK, although can take a while. When the milk is frozen it does go a very yukkie yellow colour, but once it's fully defrosted it's fine.

Thanks for the replies Rob and Tim - I think I'll buy some 1pint plastic bottles and just pop it in the freezer for emergencies then. What prompted me to ask was I had the local window cleaner here yesterday and he was asking me how much I liked it in the village - blah, blah, blah, - but I got a bit worried when he said "and don' you be worryin' 'bout winter- time. The ole Farmer, he gets his tractor on the road and pops round with the essentials for us all in bad weather!"

Just got me thinking................

LOL

We've just bought a chest freezer to keep in the shed, so I'll be stocking up on some essential myself just in case!!! LOL :) :)

I wouldnt worry Janice, we freeze milk and its fine.
You dont think the window cleaner might have been winding you up do you? its the sort of thing DH would do. Mind you we have a snow plough for one of the tractors so we are OK - perhaps I should come down to help!!!

we don't freeze milk (although my mum does), but I always have some UHT milk in the cupboard. I know it's not quite as nice as real milk, but it comes in handy when we run out, and since we don't have a milkman anymore, that happens more frequently!

LOL Mo - no I think he was serious, because he is the second person to mention it to me. The dishwasher repair man told me the same a couple of months ago when we first moved here and to be honest I took it with a pinch of salt! LOL

Mind you DH does have a big Renault Maestro van so I am sure if needs be that would be ok - but I just thought to be prepared is better than not! LOL

I did get a couple of cartons of the UHT milk Bev, but as you say, it's not as nice, but in an emergency, well it would do.

Semi-skimmed is ok to freeze but I think full fat milk shouldn't be frozen for some reason. I could be wrong though.

Could be stating the obvious here but don't freeze it if it comes in a glass bottle.

I always have a carton of milk in the freezer. Only one because to my annoyance we only have a small freezer.

To defrost leave out overnight & just shake it as it does separate .

Yes semi-skimmed not full fat but I can't remember why either.!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for the replies and advice...............following extensive research I have found out that you shouldnt freeze full fat milk (usually Blue Caps) because the cream separates from the milk on freezing and doesn't go back on defrosting :)

.......oh Ok - I phoned my old next door neighbour who just happens to have a cousin for a milkman! LOL
