Does anyone ever book a disney hotel for

part of their vacation and the other part an offsite hotel? Just looked at the Doubletree Resort and it looks great. I know I know its not Disney and I'm just as hooked to Disney resorts as the next person but my goodness the size of the rooms and the difference in price is huge. The days staying offsite could be days spent at any of the themeparks (EP/AK or MGM) but I would definitely save MK for the disney resort. I'm only talking maybe 2 or 3 nights. Curious as to whether anyone ever splits their vacation between offsite and onsite? TIA

The Double Tree Resort at Downtown Disney is AWESOME. They remodeled recently and you can usually get a good rate at www.mousesavers.com
I liked all the extra space and I could walk to DTD.

That was in the back of my mind as well. Our last trip we didn't make it to DTD and thats one of my favorite things to do at Disney. The extra space is a big deal for us being a family of 5. I'll check out Mousesavers. Thanks.

we've sorta done something like that. If we get in late from a flight we tend to stay at a marriott hotel before moving on property. We had to do that in 2005 and we found that our Courtyard Marriott room was bigger than our room at WL!!! We love staying on property for the free parking and being close to the parks so the night or two off doesn't kill us but you like what you like!

We're doing that next year... Mum and I really want to stay in AKL but its just too expensive for us for 2 weeks (we'd prefer to upgrade our flights from the UK), so after a lot of discussion... we have gone with 10-nights in a villa at the Ginn Reunion Resort and then 4 nights at AKL at the end of our trip. We've also booked Savannah rooms!

I think its a great idea and we're looking forward to cramming as much Disney in as we possibly can in those 4 days!!!

We've done that in our last trip.

We planned to be in Orlando for a couple weeks so we stayed at a disney resort (all star movies) for the first 8 days and then moved to a Marriot villas (don't remember the exact name) for the other 5/6 days. On the days at the All stars we used just Disney transportation and gone to all the disney theme parks. then on our last day we checked out, got by Swan/Dolphin and rented a car for the last few days. Then we still hit a park that day and then went to the other hotel. On the other days we used the car and the proximity to go to the Universal parks, Sea World and Busch Gardens.

It was a nice way to split the trip as we managed to take advantage and enjoy all disney magic and then do the offsite stuff staying at an offsite hotel.

Thanks for all the replies. Just thinking of an affordable way for our family of 5 to be able to stay onsite but then offset it w a/less expensive hotel. I suppose we could do this w/a moderate disney resort as well. So many decisons. Thanks again.

I stayed at an offsite hotel once (it was a doubletree, but not the one your talking about) for one night before checking into a Disney hotel. I hated it. I really needed a vacation. Work had been horribly stressful and I really need to get away. We got off the plane, got our rental car and drove to the offsite hotel. I hated the parking area (it seemed dark and seedy), I hated the lobby (it was not inviting at all), I hated the hallways (they smelled really bad) and all in all I hated that none of it felt like Disney magic. We got to the room (which was okay - nothing special) and I started to cry. It was 10:30 at night but my husband reconized that I needed a Disney fix quick. He took me to DTD to get our annual passes and we had ice cream. I was never so happy to check out the next morning and head for the Boardwalk Inn.

I won't stay offsite again. Its just not what I want out of a Disney vacation. We ventured offsite to eat on our last trip and the traffic drove me crazy. I prefer to just stay within the gates and pretend that the "real" world just doesn't exist.

I've done it a few times, too. In fact, for my upcoming trip, I booked a room at a cheap off-site place for my first night, then i'll move to ASMO for the rest of the trip.

I've done it the past two years, but not quite the same way. The first part of the trip was spent staying onsite and going to Disney Parks. The second part was spent offsite near Universal and going to those parks.

Truth be told, if you want to try it I say go for it. Disney hotels are fun, but some of the nicer offsite hotels offer larger, nicer rooms at a much cheaper cost than the Disney Deluxe. Staying at a very plush hotel for a couple days can be just as relaxing as staying onsite i.m.o.

Stay on site and then offsite when we want go to some different parks but still stay in the area in case we miss disney parks so much we want to go for the day. I'll check out the hotels near Universal - they look nice. Its hard finding a room for 5 though. Thanks for all the opinions.

My advice is to stay off-site first, then stay on-site for the end of your trip. That gives you something nice to look forward to.

And it's not terribly difficult finding accomodations for 5 or more off-site. Of the top of my head... Vistana... Vistana Villages... Caribe Royale... Parc Corniche... Nick Suites... Buena Vista Suites... AmeriSuites... There are more. And that's just the hotels - there are also rental homes.

Thanks for the names of some places - I'll check them out and the rental homes, condos etc. are interesting as well. We'll have to see what we want to do while we're there. I think staying offsite first would be best now that I think about it - we're always in a hurry to get to MK but we could wait a couple days I suppose. Thanks again.
