I can't think of a better word to describe it. ;)

I hadn't been on Space Mountain in YEARS!
Since it was new, I think.

We walked right on it early one morning during our Christmas trip.
It seemed like a little kiddie roller coaster ride!

I like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad so much more.

I was just surprised that Space Mountain still seems to be THE RIDE to get on at the Magic Kingdom.

I'm not a rollercoaster fan and was afraid to go on Rock'n'Rollercoaster for quite some time.
I'm sure glad I finally tried it, I love it!

If I were judging Space Mt. for just me, yes, it would be a tame ride. I love coasters and try any I come across. My DS 5 tried out Barnstormer this last trip and loved it so he got up the courage to try SP.Mt. He would not have had the courage nor height to ride the more modern SP.Mt. at DLParis. WDW's SP.Mt. is just perfect for him. It is now his favorite ride. We rode it four times in a row. We are going back for his birthday and he wants to ride this ride first. I am very glad he tried out this ride before it gets rehab into more of a thrill ride. I wish they could hold off on updating until my DD 2 has had a chance to experience it.

Its not a crazy coaster like the Six Flags, or IOA but it is alot of fun. We like the Hulk and those types but Space Mountain ranks up there.

Each time I get on Space Mountain i wonder,"What's the big deal?" This past summer I decided that I will not bother putting it on my "must do list" anymore. I agree with the Hulk and Dueling Dragons at IOA being GREAT coasters!

1) As a coaster designer, Space Mountain isn't great.
2) However, it is classic! I love it!
3) When they dim the lights well it is a good psychological coaster.
4) There are many fake-turns and counter-programming.

If you really want coasters, try Cedar Point Ohio.
. . . 16 coasters.
. . . wooden, steel
. . . twin racing, corkscrews, inverted, hanging, cable coasters
. . . the newest coaster is 425 feet tall !!! 125 miles per hour !!!

I think it could use some work... last time I rode it, it seemed rougher than 'normal' coasters (I'm not a coaster fan, but from the ones I've braved, it seemed rougher) DH kept complaining about his back and shoulders when he got off of it.

it is classic!
How times change!
I recall when it was the hottest thing around...

Even if it is lame to some, you still can't pay me enough to ride in a coaster! So to me (and maybe others like me) it is still terrifying...

Although it may not be the biggest, fastest or most thrilling ride, I still like Space Mountain. It is an icon, and we ride it at least once every trip. My DD who is 8 really likes it, and that is enough for me. I do find it a bit rough, not wild, just rough.

Also, I far prefer Big Thunder Mountain... it is my favorite ride in the MK, in fact, in all of WDW!

Not a big coaster fan but I like this one. The theming is great and makes it a fun experience. It's not a must-see for me, but I like it. I do like both the ride and theming of Big Thunder better.

It's past its prime and more modern attractions have improved theming and ride technonlgy, but it's a classic and has to be appreciated in conjunction with the era in which it was created. Those not alive and aware during that place in time have no sense of where SM stood as an attraction when it was created. If it didn't already exist, no one would build it from scratch now. It's still a 'must do' for us and I can't see it falling to the level that Small World represents to me.

Just as stated above......as far as big "thrill" ride or coasters go....it may be lame.
BUT....it is a CLASSIC!! And it is one that just about everyone in the family can ride!:)
I always felt it to be a little boring until my DD's first ride!!! I love to ride it just to see her face!:D She LOVES it! her favorite !!

As for the BIGGEST, FASTEST........
The big news here in northern Ohio this week...they finally announced the name of the new coaster at Cedar Point!:teeth: :teeth: :teeth:
Anyone that likes coasters has to check this out at the web site www.cedarpoint.com
The Top Thrill Dragster is unbelievable!!!!
Launch out and back coaster. Lift height of 420 feet!!! 90 degree up and 90 degrees down!!!!
Launch speed of 120 mph in 4 seconds!!!

I told my family....I've done the Millennium which has a first drop of 300 feet at speeds of 92 mph.......but this Dragster is beyond insane!!!!

So I guess if you are really looking for a thrill on a coaster you need to visit us here in Ohio:wave:

Agree with the others. It may be tame by new standards, but a classic.(just can't use the word lame.LOL). Just like some people say the Matterhorn in Disneyland is lame. It is still a classic must ride for us.1st steel rail coaster.

cindyfan: Got to make a trip to CP Haven't been there since we moved from PA 10yrs ago. That sounds awesome.Something to top the speed of Superman at MagicMountain.:)

I can remember how incredibly thrilling Space Mountain was as a young child -- I looked forward to it more than anything else at WDW.

I rode it in 2000 with DW (who was on her first trip to WDW) and she thought it was lame. When we went back last month, she didn't even want to ride it.

SM is definitely one of the most boring/ places to stand in line. I had a 25 minute wait last month and the eerie "space" music gave me a headache, along with those annoying "star" panels.

The ride itself was a bone-jarring experience. Has it always been that rough?

Those of you who think the ride is a "classic," did any of you come to that opinion after recently riding SM for the 1st time, or have you been coming to WDW for so long that riding SM is a ritual (as it is for me) that reminds you of things you loved in the past?

I personally think that SM is about as "classic" as a slide rule -- that is, it is hopelessly outdated.

By the way, I simply cannot believe that SM will stay the same for long after Mission Space opens this year, because MS will show everyone what is possible with the space concept. SM has always been the MK's signature attraction and I can't see the Imagineers letting the ride continue to become even more outdated. (I think the "mountain" is probably the most famous park icon, after the castle.)

I would personally like to see SM rethemed as a character ride. Turning it into a Buzz Lightyear ride would have been perfect, except that Buzz already has a ride. A Treasure Planet ride would have been perfect if the movie had been a success. Maybe it could be Stitch blasting into outer space.

This post will probably make some people mad, but I somehow needed to speak my piece.

Like yourself it's a ritual for us.However we won't stand in line to ride it.FP only.

I do ride WDW's Space Mountain quite often, despite the fact that it is the ride that I have gotten hurt on the most often (Do NOT ever ride with your hands up unless you want REALLY sore fingers, and if you are very tall, brace yourself for whiplash).
I wouldn't call it lame, but it is extremely rough and uncomfortable. Personally, I would love to see it replaced with something on par with DLP's version, or even Disneyland's. But that would cost money... something that the current management does not want to spend much of after the problems with Test Track, Rocket Rods, Pooh's Hunny Hunt, and apparently Mission: Space.

I like SM. I went on it this November for the first time in many years, because my DD finally made the height requirement. If the ride was lit, it probably wouldn't be that great, but the darkness really makes it exciting, since you can't always tell what's going to happen next.

It is now DD's favorite ride, and I don't see what's wrong with having coasters that the whole family can enjoy. Why does every coaster have to go 100 mph with inverted loops and god-knows-what-else? I like those coasters, too, but I can't take my daughter on them.

It doesn't seem like a stretch to me that a major ride at WDW should be appropriate for families with small kids. Isn't that a large part of the target market?

SM b/c of the darkness still gives me plenty of thrills. While its not a modern "big thrill" amusement park ride, it fits MK perfectly. Along with Big Thunder they are more family/themed oriented coasters as opposed to many that are found at your local amusement parks that just offer "thrills."

I didn't ride SM on our last trip, but my wife & daughter did, and enjoyed it thoroughly. Something about the heat and mechanical odors in SM has always hampered my enjoyment of the ride, and I much prefer Big Thunder and it's fresh air theming.

Regarding the new coaster at Cedar Point, that sucker looks like death to me! I saw a computer generation on a Detroit TV station over the weekend, and that was about as close to it as I'm going to get.
If super coasters are your life, Cedar Point is your Mecca!
