This is pretty random but I was just on the phone with my sister talking about the doll I am getting my DD for Christmas and I asked her if she remembered how she and I used to love going to Sears to look at the doll case. It was always stocked with really high end dolls and we would drool over them and beg for on of those dolls that were so special they had to be locked up behind glass.

I know there were Madame Alexander dolls, but I also feel like there was something similiar to the American Girl dolls. 16" or 18" maybe with historical clothing. These are the dolls I thought were particularly special.

She insists that I've gone crazy! Does anyone else remember the Sears doll case or the historical dolls? I was born in 1974 so this would have been in late '70s or early '80s.

I don't remember the cases at Sears, but I was born in '76 & had a few of the Madame Alexander dolls. They were "special" dolls and I wasn't allowed to play with them. I know I had a Heidi, Cinderella and one that I think was the good fairy from the Wizard of Oz. They were about 16 or 18".

I wasn't into dolls since I'm male(G.I. Joe doesn't count.....right?) But I loved the toy section in the Sears cataloger. My parents getting that was the start of many Christmas seasons for me!

Same here - brings back memories. :thumbsup2

Our Sears stores never had Madame Alexander dolls. Those could only be bought at exclusive toy stores. I remember bringing my cousin's wife to Le Jouet toy store in New Orleans just to buy a Madame Alexander doll for her daughter's Christmas present.

So what you guys are telling me basically, is that my sister is right and I am crazy!!! :rotfl:

Oh well...chalk it up to too much "Christmas cheer"!;)

I am quite a bit older than you and do not recall the dolls you are talking about , I do rememeber looking at the Marie Alexander dolls which were maybe 8 inches in height and wishing I could have one back in the 60's. In my case it was at a store called Reads which later was bought out by Jordan Marsh not a Sears store.

Don't worry about feeling as if your losing it , happens to me all the time :rotfl:

I don't remember the dolls but I certainly remember fighting with my siblings when the Sears catalog showed up!

OP in the late 60's and through the 70's, Sears did carry a line of beautiful dolls which were made in Italy. My godmother gave me one every year. This might be what you are remembering. One of my dolls looked a lot like the Madame Alexander baby doll. I was able to find pictures of 2 of them using the site Sosai posted:

You all might like this site..

It has scans of vintage Sears catalogs from the 70's and 80's, as well as from other companies!

:thumbsup2:cool1:

Thanks for the link! I just texted it to my brother, one of my favorite memories was getting the catalogs (JC Penny and Sears) and circling what I wanted. We always fought over who got it first:goodvibes

You are my hero!!! The Effanbee historical dolls! Once I had the name I was able to google them and sure enough those are the dolls that always fascinated me!

I am printing that page of the catalog out and gift wrapping for my sister for Christmas!

Looking at the 1975 Sears Wishbook I found the stereo I got for Christmas that year. Too funny! :rotfl:

That link is awesome! I also found a doll I had as a child in the 1975 wish book (on page 499 :goodvibes). It accidently got thrown out a few years ago when I moved. Brings back memories to see it again.
