Hey WISHers,

I hope everyones week is going well :thumbsup2 sooo I have this problem when I run, and I was wondering if somebody had the same thing, or knew of what I can do to make it better :goodvibes

When I run I can't breathe very well, I don't know if it is just because my lungs aren't as "fit" as my legs are and I am pushing them too hard. It only used to happen when I was at the end of a race or when cold/dry air hit my lungs (when I lived in England) Ok so I have just realized that I am explaining when it happens but not what, so I will start from the beggining.

When I used to run in England (in the cold miserble BRITISH weather!) I would cough tonnes and have sharp pains in my lungs when I ran, (this was the only sport I had a problem with it, I cycled, did gymnastics, rock climbing and had 4 horses to ride everyday but only had the problem when I ran) so I stopped running.

When I moved to FL I started running again and never had that problem, until I did the Princess 1/2, and by the time I got to MK (about mile 6:confused3 ???) I couldnt run for more than 5 mins without the feeling like my throat was closing up, so I would stop wheeze a little then I could go for another 5. I thought I was just really unfit, I hadn't really done any training for the princess and this was my own fault :rotfl:

Then I was entered in a 12k a few weeks later and 5k into it I just couldnt breathe and had to get picked up (first time ever I didnt finish:mad:) then I did a stair climb race and the same thing again, this time I pushed through but I was coughing for like 5 days after. Then after that all seemed well, I gave myself a few weeks off and now am back to training for WDW full in Jan. This time I want to be really ready so am preparing way in advance. Right now I am running 2 miles about twice a week 3 miles twice a week and then a longer one (inbetween 4&7) once a week. But I am having the same problem, even on the short runs I run for about 10 mins and I feel like I cant get any air in, my throat feels like I have a lump in it that air cant get past, and then I walk for a min or two and it goes away, then it starts all over again, but lately the distance between it happening is getting less and I can feel it happening as soon as I start. I am not going to be able to train properly if I cant get this solved.

Sorry for the crazy long message, I just re read it through and that was a marathon in itself.

but I just wanted to ask, does anyone else have this problem, and does anyone know of some good breathing excercises I can do to fix it.

Thanks so much in advance for your help :worship:

Hi Kirsty, Do you have asthma? or allergies? Could also be acid reflux.

I do have acid reflux, but it doesnt seem like the same kind of feeling that I get with that. Asthma and allergies do run pretty strongly through my family but I have never been diagnosed and dont have any other symptoms other than when I run :confused3

Last year when I first started running, I remember I would feel short of breath for a couple hours after I finished doing a LR. Not sure what caused it but I don't get it anymore. I figured maybe it was just a conditioning thing... But that's probably not what you have.

Maybe you have exercise induced asthma. I remember reading about it in a running magazine a while ago but don't remember all the details. I know it's not the same thing as regular asthma. Might be worth a visit to a doctor or a respirologist to check things out.

My daughter had this when she was a teenager. She was a competitive swimmer and that was the only time it was a problem. She had an inhaler which she only needed when she swam.
I agree, a visit to your doctor might be a good idea.

I would see a doctor but it could be allergy related. I lived in Ohio most of my life and never have problems in the spring with allergies. My 2 springs in FL though the pollen killed me, I think because I wasn't used to it. This is about the time of year they are the worst so once the trees are all done reproducing maybe it will die down.

thanks for all your replies guys, I was really hoping this was something I could solve by myself (I am on eof those people who will only go to the doctor if I am dying and or somebody abducts me! :lmao:) but if it is going to interfere with my running then I might have to make an excepting :scared:

Thanks again

Kirsty
