does anyone else have spouse that doesn't like thrill rides

It's not so much thrill rides, it's rides period. He'll say to me..."Well, we've ridden that so many time already, do we have to do it again?" Hello...this is BTMRR we're talking about honey!!! Of course we do. He just doesn't get it. But I have to say that he usually goes along quite good naturedly for the most part!!

I love the thrill rides, but DH isn't too fond of them. I am still waiting to experience Tot and RnRC.

With 4 kids pretty small I haven't pushed the subject of him waiting with all 4 in order for me to go on the rides. I figure with DVC we have years and years to do that stuff.

My soon-to-be DH is OK with most thrill rides, as long as they're not a "height" thing. He was scared to death the first time he rode Space Mountain because he was afraid of a big, unexpected drop, but when none came he decided he liked it. However, he only rode ToT once, and he says "never again". I also have to go on some of the tall rides at Cedar Point by myself while he sits by patiently, waiting for me. On all the rides where they take your picture, I'm the one grinning and laughing my head off, while he's got white knuckles and looks like he's going to pass out. :teeth:

DH can't stand roller coasters... so I have achieved total brainwashing of my DD11 (who is afraid of her shadow... it amazes me how much she loves thrill rides!!); DS7 is petrified of heights, so he and DH find something else to do while we are busy with 'important stuff'... DH & DS love to go fast, just not up and down and all around at the same time... yet DH doesn't mind Space Mtn, because he says "that's different".... HOW?????

That is exactly what happened to us this past trip. We finally got to go on Spalsh Mountain and I just HAD to buy the picture.

Here I am with my hands up smiling huge, and DH is holding on for dear life with a look on his face like he is going to barf!! I LOVE IT!!

I think he regrets saying "get the 8x10 so we can see everyone real good". Now he has to look at himself everyday looking like a big scardy cat. Hee-Hee!!

I have the same problem. My DH is scared to death of rides. He gets motion sickness from watching me play video games for crying out loud. Well, I just booked our 1st trip together to WDW for Dec. He is not excited about it at all. I am so glad I have my fellow DISer's to share my excitement. Any one have suggestions of what rides cause the most motion sickness? I am trying to make his trip a magical experience and want to avoid any problems...or shall I say sickness...

My wife is the same way. For her the ones that cause the most sickness are the ones that move. :) Seriously though, you wont know which ones will affect him any certain way until he rides them. Everyone has different tollerancy levels for this.

Perhaps b/c you can't see what the track looks like? I have terrible vertigo; if I can see a drop it will make me sick. SpaceMtn is so dark that I really can't tell which way is up most of the time, so it doesn't bother me too much. Unfortunately, I have positional hypotension, so inversions are out for me; otherwise I might try RnRC.

As far as what causes motion sickness, there are different causes. If watching video games makes you sick, you probably are affected by vision-related issues; people like that need a fixed horizon to focus on. Other problems are related to the balance mechanisms in the ear, a horizon won't help for that; you just have to move slowly and minimize changes of plane to prevent it. There are similar issues w/ positional hypotension (the giveaway for this is getting dizzy when you get out of bed); suddenly going from horizontal to vertical makes your BP drop for a minute or two, which causes dizziness. (I have ear-related problems *and* positional hypotension; I have to be very careful about what I ride.)

BTW, For people with positional hypotension, coasters w/ inversions can actually be dangerous; that many position changes in such a short period of time can cause us to briefly lose consciousness. If that happens on a coaster, you can end up with a neck or head injury, as your head flops b/c you are not bracing yourself.

Yes - except I'm the one who doesn't like them. Won't do Rockin Rollercoaster, Mission Space, Space Mountain, Tower of Terror..... At least DH can do them with DS and I can relax or shop while they are riding.

DH really likes most rides but some intense ones hurt his back (Rock n Roller Coster, Hulk.) He tried Bonine for rides like Space Mountain and Star Tours that made him sick and now he is fine on those too. TOT, Big Thunder, Splash, Mission Space, Dr. Doom-he has always been fine on and loves them.

DH is another roller-coaster-hater, and loves to tell me about fatal accidents on coasters. He is more than willing to wait while I do RNRC and ToT, though - he's the best! (Well, OK, almost best - the fatal thing is a bit much.) He will do Splash Mountain, though. He's also had back and neck surgery and can't do jerky things like Dinosaur.

My mom also hates those kind of rides and my step-father has one of the most screwed up backs ever from an almost-fatal bike incident as a child, so they don't do any of those rides - but for some reason she felt she had to do the ToT this trip. (I think it was the article in their paper last year about some little old 80-ish lady riding ToT about a million times.) She tried to blame it on me, saying I had raved about it (NOT - it's just something to pass the time while waiting on my RNRC FP to be available), and now blames me for scaring the Mickey right out of her. My step-father did go thru the whole line with her to enjoy the theming, though.

That's my DH as well. He liked Mission Space and Test Track, but hated Rock N Roller Coaster and TOT. He rode them, but he hated them.:) And, he will not ride anything twirly like the teacups or PrimeEval Whirl!

bbowers: you are *much* more likely to die in a car accident on the way to the park than you are on an attraction. It's not even close.

DW used to avoid "big rides", until I finally talked her on to Magnum. She loved it so much, she ran around to ride it again.
