Does anyone else get totally confused when banking and borrowing?

I am attempting to plan two trips in 2004, and I am finding myself completely confused by which points I need to use and when. My resale came with 219 banked points from Sept '01. Then I got another 250 in Sept '02. I banked 206 of those 250, and used the rest for the trip we just took in May. But then I had to borrow 58 from Sept '03, to take an unexpected trip to HH.

I am an accountant. This shouldn't be throwing me as much as it is, but I am having trouble figuring out how many points I am required to spend on my June '04, and how many will be available on my October '04 trip. Aaaaaargh! Does anybody have a spreadsheet or something to make this simple? I tried keeping track in MS Money, as I think Doc suggested, but that doesn't help me with the expiration date of the points.

Ah, a points system sounded so straight-forward when I originally heard it. Does anyone else feel this math headache come on when they start vacation planning?

Had to laugh at this one - I've got three tracking programs on my computer, and still obsess over missing banking deadlines, etc. We also bought a 2nd contract with banked points, and that really messed me up. Whew. You're not alone.

I do have a nice little excel spreadsheet that's kinda fun if you want it. Just e-mail me at tony1865@telepak.net and I'll be happy to pass it along. (It's not original with me.)

I think Caskbill's is the best overall out there these days. It's a blast to play with and do "what-if" scenarios. His address is in all his posts.

I get no comission from recommending his, btw. ;)

Speaking of tracking programs - does anyone have some links to websites that might have some tracking programs you can download? I found one, which is pretty good - but I'm just wondering if there are anymore.

I would do an excel spreadsheet. Setup each use year, start with 9-1-02 to 8-31-03. Then setup 3 columns for points available - banked 01, current 02, borrowed 03. Enter the balance going into the use year. Then list any stays during that use year, how many points needed and then break the points down into each column. Then subtract for your new balance. Then setup the next use year - 9-1-03 to 8-31-04 and setup your columns for points 02, 03, 04 and use the balances from your 02/03 year at the top.

lacool -

I think what makes it confusing is unless your use year is January, the year your trip is in is not the same as your use year.

O.K. since that sentence made no sense:

Your June 04 trip would use 2003 points (or the banked 2002 pts)
Your Oct 04 trip would use 2004 points

Hope this helps
Sandy

Okay I pray that Webmaster Doc replies to this thread he knows everything about banking and borrowing and UY - and I think I have a grasp but please get what I am about to say verified either with MS or someone else on this board.

The 219 banked points from original UY Sept 2001 that were banked into Sept 2002 UY I beleive will expire on August 31st of this year.

The banked 206 pts from original UY Sept 2002 banked into Sept 2003 UY will expire on Aug 31st 2004

And I beleive secondary to borrowing 58pts from your Sept uy 2003 allottment of points you will have 192pts coming on Sept 1,2003 That will also expire Aug 31st 2004 unless banked.

So I think for your June 2004 trip you can use - should use your 206 banked points and if you need more use some of the 192 pts coming on Sept 1 2003

as for your October 2004 trip you can use any of your 2003 allotted pts that you bank and you can borrow pts from your 2004 allottment as of Sept 1,2003

But I think the 219 pts that started out as 2001 allotted points will expire if not used by Aug 31st of this year.

Good Luck

PS

My head aches too;)

Just make sure you allocate the banked points to your new reservations first, because you can't bank them twice.
