My parents live out in the country and there is no garbage service. Well, actually I think there is, but it costs money and it's inconvenient. Anyways I am totally fascinated by this whole burning the garbage! My sister hates it (usually her chore) but anytime I'm home I love to burn it! Maybe I'm just a big lamo, but I think it's fun. Of course a few times the flames have gotten a little out of control :earseek: ...I didn't realize you're not supposed to put everything in at once.

When my sister first started doing it, I heard that she put a bunch of green leaves and other "live" plant stuff. Well it was smoking a lot so she had the grand idea to put water in there...that made it worse and she said there was so much smoke the neighbors way down the road thought something was on fire! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

The night before I left for school we even put sticks in the "burn barrel" and roasted marshmallows.

hi,
i'm here, did someone say fire??oh another false alarm,i hate those.we have family in tennesse and yes they do this.we were there in 2000 and i was asked if i wanted to burn the garbagge in honor of my fdny job.i said i will watch did'nt want ot set it up.i could already see the frontline of the tennesse news"F.D.N.Y. employee on vacation burns down state, flimed at 11" :rotfl: when asked for comment his reply was "they made me do it i swear"

LOL!!

I remember when I was young and staying over at a friends house. He lived in a quiet, wooded area so we had a fire one night...completely out of newspaper! We just kept adding more. The next morning his mom was pissed when she saw burnt newspaper ALL OVER THE YARD! Of course we had to clean it up...

My aunt and uncle burn their trash. I now think it would be a big pain, but as a kid I thought it was cool, being from the city I had never heard of burning your own trash.

I don't think I would eat marshmallows roasted over my trash can though ;)

we have a burning barrell so does my Dad
we have regular trash pick up ( aobut 70 dollars a month We have our own dumpster)
but we burn cardboard and all "paper" garbage saves room in the dumpster so we don't have to pay for extra pickups

My only problem is getting it started sometimes

I always tell DH

"honey i was trained to put fires out when i was in the fire dept not start them"

I live in a location where EVERYONE burns trash and debris. It's a HUGE problem. I can't even open my windows in my house on a nice day and can't drive down the street without rolling windows up when I come to a stream of smoke. They burn trash along the interstate and it causes crashes because the smoke is thick on the road. Sometimes it smells like garbage....sometimes like burning rubber. Some fires are small and some look like an entire shopping mall is on fire. (going by the amount of smoke in the air). Very unpleasant. Sad when you take a plane to visit another place and upon arriving back home, as the plane is landing you see a smoke trail in the air and say "Ahhhhh....home crap home."

That would be a problem
that is why we don't burn all garbage just papers but once when DD was little she had thrown a can of whip topping in the paper bucket ( we have seperste garbage cans) and i didn't catch it ( she was 4) well when it exploded it sounded like a gun scared me ALOT her too she learned ONLY papers

is it leagal where you are to burn all that trash????????

No we can't burn trash in the city. When I was little my grandparents burned paper and leaves. I love the smell of burning leaves. :)

No burn barrels around here, but I know my brother in PA has had one in the past. I wish we could have one.... it seems like half of our weekly trash is paper (mostly due to DH's newspaper addiction). We could limit our trash pick up to every other week or eliminate it all together and make a monthly dump run if we could burn our paper. Oh well. But personally, I'm surprised that people are allowed to burn just anything. Doesn't burning plastic and styrofoam give off nasty fumes??...............P

Its not legal where we live, but it doesn't stop our neighbors from doing it all the time. They even built a fire pit in their backyard and burn in that. The fire department makes many many trips to their house to tell them to stop. (we have never called the fire department on them, but it just shows it bothers other people too) They make so many calls to their house that the neighborhood kids don't even go and to watch the trucks anymore.

There is nothing worse than the smell of burning trash unless its burning leaves. That is allowed in our town during the day. YUCK!!!!

Same here...

Burning is NASTY!!!

The only people who don't think so are the ones lighting the fires, while the wind carries the disgusting stench AWAY from them and their home.

Here we have a brush burning season - late winter to late spring usually... and you can have a 'cooking fire'
So my DH will throw some Potatoes in tin foil rest them on the side and call ANYTHING a cooking fire!
We are actually getting a wood burning furnace for the new house so the garbage will heat our house :confused3 good thing its way down the driveway and the heat gets piped up!

We live out in the country and don’t have town funded trash pick up. I pay $20 a month for trash pickup and in my opinion it is WELL worth its money. We recycle the paper and cans/bottles and bring it to the dump once a month or so other then that everything ales gets toss in the trash. Pickup is every Tuesday and they take what we leave out for them in the bags. We usually have 1-2 black bags every week, the company we deal with will take 3-4 bags at a time, but around holidays and such we had more and they always took it. In Maine we get some bad snow storms and our trash is always picked up as scheduled.

The neighbor behind me does this sometimes and I can't stand it. If you live in the country where you can do it without choking neighbors, that's one thing. But in a subdivision, it's just wrong, and probably illegal too.

It is illegal where I live to burn trash.

Doesn't that contribute to poor air quality? Doesn't seem right to me. :confused3

Oh I forgot to mention that we do have a fire pit that we like to have fires in during summer time when the kids can roast hotdogs and marshmallows. We also use the fire pit in the fall for leaf burning but we are at least 1 mile away from closest neighbor and in the middle of the woods so if we are bothering anyone it’s the chipmunks.

Yeah it probably does but if we paid for pickup then they'd have to drive out and back, using gasoline which also produces emissions. Maybe not as much though.

It's just much more convenient to burn for us, plus it's free. My dad doesn't mind doing it either. Plus garbage has never been more fun! Then again if I had to do it on a regular basis it might drive me crazy...

Also I don't think landfills aren't the greatest thing either. I mean I'm sure a lot of peoplel throw aways chemicals and whatnot that could leach into the ground and get into groundwater. But it's been years since I took Environmental Science.

It's illegal here to burn anything but yard waste and wood. (We live in the country) We used to burn some of our garbage too until DH let the scrap lumber pile get too close to the burn barrell...I burned up 6 big juniper trees that day  (No big loss - wish I could have taken out the other 60 or so along our driveway) :)
