my neighborhood is having a garage sale this weekend so I may as well have one. I have a lot of stuff I got from couponing to sell but I'm having a hard time getting motivated. So much work, but worth it.

do you love or loathe having garage sales? the worst part is picking through my kids' stuff trying to get them to part with any of it

No sales, we donate and take it off on taxes.

herc.

I have had a few sales, but normally only if I need the money. I sell big things on Craig's List, actually, I have sold a lot little stuff also. I sold a "lot" of toys for $10, good deal for someone, and then I made the $10. Not a lot, but more than if I would have donated them. I am currently working on selling a bunch of stuff on CL and cleaning out my garage at the same time. I even found some one to come pick up my broken down dishwasher for free. I didn't feel like hauling the thing, then paying the dump to take it!

I donate our clothes to Goodwill and write that off on taxes. Our Goodwill makes it so easy, they have a drive through to drop stuff off

I also do the couponing/stockpiling thing. I think it's so worth it, and you're right, it is a LOT of work. I had a garage sale a couple weeks ago for only 1 day (5 hours) and made $500....and I didn't really have any used items, just my stockpile items. I plan on having another one in the next couple weeks before we leave for Orlando in August.

Our subdivision has an annual garage sale. We participate every other year

I love getting rid of all the "good junk" and having a little cash to spend when it's over. Matter of fact, I'm moving in about a week...and due to where I live (most of the community is very wealthy and wouldn't come to my condo area for a sale) I've been giving everything away...stuff that would make good money in a sale anywhere else.

Hope you have a great turn out if you decide to participate in the sale!

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what are "stockpile" items? Thanks!

for me, stockpile is stuff I got for free or close to it with coupons that we use ourselves or if I have a lot, I sell in a grage sale. The easiest stuff to accumulate for me is health and beauty items. But other people stockpile food and perishables.

I too stockpile and only sold some of these items at 1 tag sale we had. Because I just wanted it gone that day. I was in a clean out mood. By the end of the tag sale all of the "new items" were gone. Most people that bought them bought large numbers of each because I kept the price so low. One person even told me that he intended to bring them back to his flea market booth to re sell.
I usually donate my extras to the Open Pantry or just give them away. I have several family members that come to my house to shop for free. lol

I love being able to give stockpile items ot people in need or co-workers who need a pick-me-up and esp to family. Costs me nothing and goes miles in making me feel good. At Xmas I fill bags for the small homeless shelter affiliated with our company.

i'm no moral policeman but I sorta feel like garage sale-ing stockpiles isn't 'right'. I don't know why, exactly..but I do. I am like the PP...I give it away to friends and family...homeless shelter...etc...but I don't re-sell it.

I think garage sales are a pit* anyway. I'd rather just do craigslist or donate it for the tax write-off.

I feel the same way. If I get it for free or very low cost I donate it rather than try to make money off it.

I was very dissapointed with my garage sale. I had it for two weekends, and only made about a 160$.

For some, you have to remember it doesn't always benefit in tax deductions to just donate (if the income is too low, even saying you donated a 1,000$ doesn't change your taxes). I really wish a lot more stuff had sold, but I still feel better for giving to the Salvation Army than giving it to some one for a quarter just cause they don't want to pay what i'm asking. At least the SA will put the money from the sale to good use.

I can't believe how much it drains you to be outside like that, the first day wiped me out.

I have never personally had a garage sale, but my father has them a lot and actually makes a lot of money. He made 750 in one day. (Friday) on his last one. Personally I think he sold everything TOO CHEAP. He wanted to get rid of it though soo... to each their own. You never know what people are looking for. If you can get motivated to do it you might make a few extra bucks!

My sisters next door neighbor has a 5 bay garage behind his 2 family house and he collects things during the year and has multiple monster garage sales over the summer. I personally don't have that kind of storage or dedication but its fun to watch from next door over a Margarita.

I just posted a similar post last week. My sister & I are HUGE couponers :) We had a garage sale last wkd & made over $1500 for DISNEY! It was great! The majority of our stuff was new & we sold it for way below retail. We rec'd many compliments on our prices & how organized we were. My goal is to do 1 more before my Disney trip.

Yes- that's the key (IMO) - organized and cheap.

You will get a lot of people actually looking at more of your stuff if you have it well organized instead of just in bins that they have to dig through. AND, at least around here - most garage salers are looking for CHEAP stuff. Went to one yesterday and the first thing I saw was a little ride on toddler toy for $10 or so - and I immediately knew that everythign was overpriced, so I didn't linger very long. No need to haggle when they start way too high.

I'm having one in a month...don't have it organized yet but I have a lot of stuff. 80% of it will be 50 cents (most kids clothes and shoes), $1 or $2 - with a few handfuls of stuff for $5 or $7.

And I hope to have it VERY WELL organized. Obviously easier if the weather's nice so I can spread it out more - need to wait to see on that one.

Love having yard sales...people love the stockpile items - they r getting GREAT prices and i'm making a bit for my time such as cutting coupons searching out the sales etc - nothing wrong with it.

We do a yard sale 1x a year! had one a couple of weeks ago - think we made about 600.00 its alot of work BUT its fun i enjoy speaking w/the people etc.

Good luck!

I recently was in our city wide garage sale in May. People come from hours away for this sale and even stay in hotels over night -it is crazy. Alot of the items I sold was "stockpile" items. I order coupons when I see a really good sale coming up and stock up. I had about 5-6 (8 foot tables) full of stockpile items. I mark the items at about 1/2 of what you would buy them for in the stores. People love it. I love to shop so this is a good hobby for me. I also love to have garage sales. I made $2300 on this sale. All of which went right into the Disney Fund. That will pay for the DVC Villa I want to rent and for tickets.

I had a few sales last year also. One I made $1500 and the other was not even advertised and I made $600.

I'm thinking of having another one in the fall as I have gotten alot of good deals lately from Walgreens/Target.
