Does anyone actually believe there's going to be a room-only code in the future?

By that I mean a room-only code that's available to the General Public, not just to the chosen who get a postcard or e-mail with an individual-specific code. The first 3 of our trips were happily possible because of GP codes, but one never came out at all for our trip last May. From checking Mary's site, it's been over a year since that's happened. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to nab a great price on a WDW resort room, but I'm not holding my breath.

So, am I being cynical or realistic?

I think you are being realistic. It seems that Disney is leaning heavily toward package discounts.

It's supply and demand.

As long as the crowds continue to flock to WDW and pay the asking price, little or no codes will be offered.

Once rooms and resorts are feeling pain from people NOT going to WDW, they will start offering codes again.

I just think they've realized they can make more on discounted packages instead... a way to lock more people into tickets and more days in the parks and trying to sell the dining on top of that... discounted packages are the way to go now.

Last year, we bought the 10-day non-expiring MYW passes and used half of them (5 days). When we go in May 2006, our son will have turned 10. I know that we can go to Guest Services and have it upgraded to the Adult ticket, but if there's a really great package code that comes out, what are my choices? Could I have DS's ticket adjusted and not use it on this trip, but save it for a later trip?

Thanks,

When free dining came out, lots of people just booked the package with the room and the dining, then bought one day passes to qualify for the package. That would probably work in your case if a dining package came out that didn't require a minimum amount of pass days.

2005 we saw alot of changes at WDW, with booking rooms, dining plans, tickets and EMH. As far as room only discounts, I think we will not see them as Disney is pushing the packages which include dining. It's time to change your gameplan and look into other venues of discounts, i.e. AAA and AP. As things change.ds last year, we decided it was time to buy into the DVC and we are glad we did.

Put me in the group -- obviously in the minority -- that believes we'll see room only codes come back.

The reality is that even $20 or $30 for a room is enough to pay for the extra overhead that having extra guests mean. It also means more park revenue and stuff.

Disney is not sold out all the time. Room only codes would sell more rooms, and lead to more revenue, and they know it. The trick for disney is managing expectations. Think of it this way -- airlines that fly with empty seats would be delighted to sell those empty seats for $20 at the gate. Why don't they? Because if they did, many people would stop booking at regular price to try to get the gate discounts.

I think that disney is deliberatley artificially stifling room only codes to manage expectations. To draw out more rack and AAA rate revenue, and reduce dependence on room only codes. MYW tickets and packages are also a very major overhaul, introduced only a year ago, and so I think disney has been trying to stimulate this new product.

But none of this means that room only codes won't come back. It's all cyclical in travel, and disney is the master at managing expectations. Eventually, even if rooms are selling at a high rate, disney will always want to build and sell more.

In short, this very thread is evidence of exactly what I'm saying. You'll start to see room only codes come back right around the exact time that most of you stop depending on them. See?

I don't think we will see them for a while. Even AP rates are slimmer in discounts then they were in 2004. I won't even buy an AP for the room discount because not only is it a gamble but the discounts are small.

Now that was well put, right there. Gave me something to think about. You can relate it to the McDonald's I worked at in H.S. We were not allowed to give out food at the end of the night that was left over because people would not buy food that late and would wait for the freebie.
