For carry ons?

Knives are prohibited, but tools less than 7 inches are allowed?

i would put in your checked bag knife are not allowed in carry on bags they if it dosnet have a blade then you can carry it on. tsa say you have to check the pen knife sorry. they will only allow small scissors for medical reason and they have to be a certain size. if your knife has blade that can come out then take out the blade and pack them in your checked bag and the rest can go they might search the bag to make sure their no blades in your bag. you dont have to give the tsa a reason to take something from you.

Nevermind :)

All blades and knives no matter the size cannot be carried on.

I lost my very expensive swiss army knife almost a year before one of our trips to Disney. When we got to the scanner, they pulled my purse and repeatedly put it through the xray. They would not even talk to me. I had no idea what the problem was. After at least 8 times, they took it to the side and put some of those cloth squares in it. I'm not sure what they are for but nothing happened. So, back to the xray one more time before they decided to clear the area and search by hand. They found it... my swiss army knife. Apparently, it had been hiding all this time under the seam at the bottom of my purse. At first, I was happy that he found it. But then I quickly noticed he was not smiling. He was not going to let me board. My hubby and the kids had already gone ahead without me. I had to beg and cry to get on the plane. I, of course, had to let them confiscate it.
I would not take the chance on if they find it, because you may not be able to board the plane at all.

They were checking for explosive residue.

?? What were you crying about? All you had to do was give up the knife.

The average passenger would simply have the item confiscated and would be sent on their way.

The first thing I said was that they could trash it. They said absolutely they were going to keep it but I was still not going to be allowed to board. I think it was because of the way it was hidden they thought that I was trying to conceal it. And I was crying because they had told my family that they had to go through and clear the area. I was by myself and they said that I could not board and I could not go get them. So, please forgive me if I was a little upset about my family being split up.

You didn't explain this in your original post.

If everything happened as you said, the TSA agents should have realized that you just forgot this knife was in your purse and not harassed you.

Yes, she did. At least, it sure didn't need explaining! She said:

"Apparently, it had been hiding all this time under the seam at the bottom of my purse. At first, I was happy that he found it. But then I quickly noticed he was not smiling. He was not going to let me board."

Pretty easy to understand why he wasn't going to let her board!

I have a small swiss army knife that I actually bought on a trip to Switzerland. Anyway, years ago I was flying home from San Diego (they didn't catch it in PHX) and forgot I had it in my carry on. TSA found it, I had to go back down to the main level, find a shop and buy an envelope to mail it home to myself. I was thankful that they gave me the option. I don't think you can do that anymore though.

I think it really depends on the airport and how busy it is. I remember when we flew from Burlington, Vermont the first time, my DH had forgotten his small swiss knife on his keychain. TSA proceeded to take him out of line, tell him he had a "weapon" in his luggage, and offered him to go put it in the car, check it, or thrash it. What a surprise! As he went back to the car, they even told him he was better to leave all the carry-on items with me!!! Small airports... I'm pretty sure it never would have happened in Montreal or Orlando!

I think the OP has gotten the needed answer here. Take your knife but be prepared to give it up at security. The vast majority of passengers with Swiss Army knives have had them taken away...at least that is what has been reported here. Do as you wish...but again, be prepared to lose the knife.
End of thread.
