Dodd: Administration pushed for language protecting bonuses

(CNN) -- Senate Banking committee Chairman Christopher Dodd told CNN Wednesday that he was responsible for language added to the federal stimulus bill to make sure that already-existing contracts for bonuses at companies receiving federal bailout money were honored.

Dodd acknowledged his role in the change after a Treasury Department official told CNN the administration pushed for the language.

Both Dodd and the official, who asked not to be named, said it was because administration officials were afraid the government would face numerous lawsuits without the new language.

Dodd, a Democrat, told CNN's Dana Bash and Wolf Blitzer that Obama administration officials pushed for the language to an amendment designed to limit bonuses and "golden parachutes" at those companies.

"The administration had expressed reservations," Dodd said. "They asked for modifications. The alternative was losing the amendment entirely."

On Tuesday, Dodd denied to CNN that he had anything to do with adding the language, which has been used by officials at bailed-out insurance giant AIG to justify paying millions of dollars in bonuses to executives after receiving federal money.

He said Wednesday that the "grandfather clause" language "seemed like innocent modifications" at the time.

"I agreed reluctantly," Dodd said. "I was changing the amendment because others were insistent."

Misleading title.

Where did he lie? That's what he's said all along. :confused3

ETA- How is he throwing Obama under the bus? The lawsuit concerns are valid.

Someone better tell CNN that b/c they are reporting that on Tuesday he denied any knowledge of it.

To me it is like throwing the administration under the bus b/c the reaction over the weekend appeared to me as shock and outrage. The wording in the bailout appears that they knew about it all along.

On Tuesday, Dodd claimed no involvement with the loophole, on Wednesday, he said he did "fix it", at the urging of the Treasury Dept.

Ok...How long before the News Papers start calling this "TreasuryGate"?????

Ya know its coming!!!!!!

Dodd got some splain to do, who is this new "treasury official" ..Deep Throat (or should we say 'Deep Pockets"):rolleyes1

This is a HUGE FIASCO of significant proportians...be interested to see how it plays out.

Obama has said that he didnt know about the AIG bounuses until last week.

In a round about way, Chris Dodd is implicating that he was told by the Treasury Department to GIVE AIG the bonuses. And since this "unamed" Treasury Department person ,is most likely Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner. Tim reports directly to Obama...therefore implicating that Obama knew last month and either did nothing...or was the "Mastermind" behind it all :scared1:

Tim since becoming Treasury Secretary has still not hired a staff...which in everybodies eyes is :scared1: . Also if you recall, Tim "forget" to pay his taxes too. Add this to AIG gave the Obama Campaign ALOT of $$$$$..Something aint right here.

Todays hearings (however messed up they were) OPENED a can of worms.

Clearly they have all been lying about what they knew and when they knew it - Dodd, Obama, Geithner....

They simply misjudged the public outrage the loophole would create and are now trying to cover their tracks....

You forgot to say 'alleged":lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

The spin on this is going to be fun! Can't wait until Gibbs gets all red-faced and testy explaining it to the masses!

And then there's this gem from Rep.(D) Paul Kanjorski's testimony today:

I'm sick and tired of hearing the administration and the Secretary of the Treasury say "we just found out about it." That's not true. And if he did just find out about it on Thursday or Wednesday then he better get to his mail department and to his telephone people because we communicated with the Treasury at least six or seven times.

I assume some poor chap in the mail room is going to take the fall....

Here's the irony in all of this... Since many of the bonuses, such as the the AIG bonuses, where contractually obligated retention bonuses, the White House's concerns were probably legitimate. And yet, when the AIG bonuses were made public, instead of Obama coming forward and saying what his Administration already knew; "Look people, as much as it sucks, contractually AIG was required to make the payments. We don't have the legal power to just rip up legal contracts.", they opted to join the populist mob in faux outrage. It was funny today that Maureen Dowd commented that "Barack Obama even needs a teleprompter to get mad." Ouch!!!

You couldn't script it any better if you tried...

Congressional Democrats own this. Bonuses and all. Lock, stock and barrel...The GOP voted against the "stimulus" .:thumbsup2
