Doctor fired over "Dunkin Doughnuts equals death" sign

But here's the thing: not everyone who drinks sweet tea, eats potato chips or enjoys soda pop succumbs to diabetes, holster hips and muffin top. Therefore the premise of the equation, no matter how humorous you try to make it, is wrong. The physician's stance on doughnuts = death was, and is, absolutely wrong.

It's called hyperbole.

His approach would have been better had he taken the route of, "Have you had your carrots today?" or "Milk, does a body good" versus what he wrote.

But we already have those types of messages, yet 2/3 of adults in America are overweight and that number is increasing, and so are the rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. So these messages clearly are not getting through to people.

Health reform idea: Put down that donut

Obesity health costs: $147 billion a year
There’s no doubt that the bulk of the nation’s health care costs are self-inflicted. Smoking, high blood pressure and being overweight are the top risks for early death, accounting for more than 1 million premature deaths each year, with physical inactivity, high blood sugar and alcohol use not far behind, according to an April study by the Harvard School of Public Health.

The price tag for obesity has soared to $147 billion a year, new government studies show, and smoking costs about $193 billion in medical expenses and lost productivity.

“To have hundreds of thousands of premature deaths caused by these modifiable risk factors is shocking," noted Goodarz Danaei, a co-author of the Harvard risk study.

Those signs aren't going to make anybody change their eating habits. They are going to make people tune him out or think he's a nutjob.

Sorta like PETA = nutjob - with their over-the-top antics..

And outlawing what employees eat is just plain wrong. If he wants to offer to bring the carrot sticks for morning break, that's fine. Otherwise, it's not his place to dictate what other adults eat.

Couldn't agree more..

When he became the head of the Bay County Health Department, he also told employees that they could no longer bring in donuts, homebaked goods etc. He felt that they should make a good impression for the public. But he did it in a strong arm manner. What if someone wanted to bring in homebaked goods that were healthy? They were not given that choice, all baked goods were prohibited.

I make very healthy muffins - have well over 1500 recipes now.. Should they be banned? According to him, yes - according to me - no..

The manner in which he approached this situation is about as effective as belittling an overweight person and calling them fat so they'll suddenly "see the light" and stop overeating or nagging a smoker to death with all of the horror stories and statistics (which they already are aware of) and assuming it will make them quit smoking.. It doesn't work that way - and if he's a doctor, he "should" be smart enough to realize that..

Also found it interesting that he had all of the snacks removed from the vending machines and replaced with peanuts - when it seems that everyone and their brother is deathly allergic to them.. Brilliant..
