Do your friends/family assume you got to be a DVC member for FREE?!?

Hey Margie J - I own DVC and also happen to love living in Malden!! Imagine that. And so do our neighbors and friends.

I have a stomach ache after reading some of these posts :worried: .

Unbelievable what some people will do, and they call themselves family :( .

My MIL and FIL didn't like this arrangement and moved into the master bedroom. Needless to say, they will NOT be invited back!

Got to think on your feet. Next time when they are out doing the park put all their stuff into the hallway run down to the front desk take their name off the room and change the keys. Hunt down the maids and tell them to tell your in-laws, if they ask where you are, there must be a mistake. There is only an old couple in the unit who moved in today.::yes:: ::yes:: ::teeth: :teeth: :teeth::Pinkbounc :bounce:

I don't think that people think we got DVC for free, I think they think we are loaded!! And therefore, can afford to bring them for free!! (I am talking about us personally)

So far I have only brought my mom on my points. Of course I did not charge her. I also paid for her airfare ($205) and she picked up the car rental ($115).

Not only did she not say thank you once, but she picked a fight with me while we were there!!

I do not tell anyone how many points we own, and this is the only place I can come to to rejoice over new addons!!

We also do not tell people when we go away. The only person who knows about every trip we have taken is my sister and that's because she takes us to the airport! We figure it is easier for us if we do not tell my parents or DH's parents or my friends...

I look at DVC as my home. If I invite people to my home, I don't expect them to pay for the privlege. Although I do hope they will bring something in return.

If people invite themselves, they are either welcome or not. If not, no explanation is needed.

Well, maybe so, but how many friends do you have that are so close that you invite them to your home for overnight stays? We love to entertain (at both "homes"), but sleepovers are reserved for very few.

I will certainly remember this for next time. Wait...there WON'T BE a next time. No re-invites for them. Nosiree!

And, as a double whammy, they followed our every move. We picked rides that we knew they wouldn't ride just to get away from them for a minute, and they would just say, "oh, have fun, we'll wait for you here." aaaaahhhhhhh! They....drive....me.....CRAZY!!!!!

We have a contract pending for OKW (Pixie Dust & prayers that it gets through ROFR!!!) and I hope we don't discover our family & friends are moochers!

I do have a nice story, tho'. Very close friends of ours have 2 DVC contracts and have been saying for years that it would be great to be at WDW at the same time so we could do things together. Anyway, we finally planned to be down there at the same time as them because our daughter was singing with the high school choir for Magical Musical Days. I was doing my research on the web about which resort to stay at and asked their opinion about which 'moderate' they thought best because there were no 'value' rooms available. They responded by insisting we use their second contract and booked us a 2 BR at OKW right next to them!!!

Of course we can never repay that kindness, but we did take them to an extravagant dinner at Fultons to say thank-you.

May all of us be blessed with such friends!!

Wow - tiggerjan - what great friends.

BTW - do you have any info on the Magic Music Days. I e-mailed WDW 2X about this (I own a dance studio) & have yet to get a response. (Sorry that's off topic!)

I can totally understand how someone would sort of think of it as "free" or as in you've already paid for it, so now it is just a matter of sharing what you own. I really wanted the company on my first trip but....

I had no hesitation in explaining the points system in detail to my sister and would for anyone who was going to come---it's not so much that I don't want to freely share, but I prefer to be up front and explain the cost in terms of points. True, you are sharing what you would be paying for anyway, but you may also be limiting yourself to less time on your own. Anyway, if any gift is sort of taken for granted, I think it would be disheartening to invite people.

Geez, I have a problem getting my friends and relatives to come! Often they feel like they are imposing, but I try to explain that one of the joys of having DVC is to share it with our friends and family. Luckily, they all understand that this is something we paid for, and always try to do something for us to compensate (e.g., buying the food, rental car, sometimes even plane tickets, etc.), but I will never take staight out payment (unless I rent out when we're not with them.)

I've read several posts for people from many threads who would never consider using their points to bring someone else along (whether it be bigger or extra rooms), but I don't see it as wasting my points. I think of it as a way to enjoy my own trip more by sharing the experience with people I care about.
