Do your fingernails have to match your toenails?

I have decided that I am going to take better care of my nails. They are so short and if they grow even a little, they split and peel. I figured if they are going to be so short, they are at least going to be painted. I want to make sure that my toenails are painted this summer too.

ULTA had a sale this week on OPI nail polish and since I read so many great things on here about it, I went ahead and bought a few bottles. They had a "buy two, get one free" deal. Sooooo, I went a little crazy and bought six bottles. I also bought a clearance OPI that was in the basket at Trade Secret, a base coat and top coat. I really splurged. It was a present to myself for finishing up another semester at college and a reward for regularly going to the gym. It was also a badly needed pick-me-up.

Anyway, I'm a little skeeved out putting something on my hands that was just brushed all over my toes. So I thought I'd save my cheap old polish for my toes. But will it look bad, especially with summer sandals, to not have them match???

Nope. Fingers are natural and toes are purple. Tomorrow my toes may be tangerine... but the fingers will still be natural. Do what ever you like and who cares what anyone else thinks about your nail paint.

I usually make it a rule to go more natural on the fingernails, but splurge and go crazy with the toes. Orange, purple, red, whatever.

Currently my fingernails just have a clear coat and my toenails are bright red.

Mine have to coordinate. I don't get pedicures, as often as I have my gel nails filled in. I usually start out w/ them matching, and then go w/ a lighter color, or a french manicure on my hands.

Well, it looks like I'm the odd one out. My fingers and toes always match. Right now they're apple red. I get my fingers done every 2 weeks and my toes every 4. So, basically the color switches once a month or so.

Mine usually match. I get them done once a month, sometimes in the summer every three weeks. I am bad about doing my own nails and I have used those peel on ones from Avon but I do try to pick a color that is close to the one on my toes.

If your feet are clean why would you not want to use the same polish on your fingers? :confused3

It's hit and miss but not a must. I always have a plain pink/white french on my toes. While I always have a french on my fingers, often the tip of my finger french is a soft pink or peach color.

No, but they are usually natural. :)

I am an OCD matching kinda girl. So yeah they gotta match. The only exception is if I dont paint the nails but the toes are always painted.

Nope, I never do my fingernails. It would be fighting a losing battle to keep polish on them for more than a day so I don't bother. I always keep my toes done though!

The polish definetly does not have to match, but we do have to come back to the original problem...unless you have some sort of toenail fungus, you shouldn't be worrying about using the polish on both fingers and toes. There shouldn't be anything on your feet when you're polishing that you wouldn't want on your hands...:confused3

recently mine have been matching, french mani on both hands and feet. But I just recently removed my acrylic nails. I like them but It was getting pricey to get them AND my toes done and I decided I'd rather do my own fingernails than toenails, so I took them off so I can just paint my own nails.

Never bothered me to use my polish on both my toes and fingers back when I did my own toes....A)the polish has so many chemicals in it, it kills everything it touches, B) I have healthy feet, and C) I clean my feet before I start.

I get manicures and pedicures and the places I have been don't use different polish for them. If I get them to match, they will use the same bottle.

Usually I keep my nails natural and my toes something bright because my toes will last for weeks and my nails only last a few days.

I am allergic to nail polish on my face, so more than a few days of having my nails painted and I get scaly patches on my face. Its from where the polish touches my face when I put my hands on my face.

fingers are pink and white gel and toes are OPI red (that's the color name)

My fingers are pink and white acrylic and toes are cabernet- they were dark blue until Saturday!

Last week a lady told me that my hands were very conservative but my toes were really 'out there'!

Mine are the same way. I wish my fingers would last more than 3 days without a chip. No amount of base coating or top coating or expensive polish seems to do he trick. Thats why I originally went to acryllic.

Thanks for all the replies. I really was interested in what others did.

I did have a problem with athlete's foot last year and a yellow, thick pinky toe. It took forever to clear up but that's why I was skiddish about putting all my fancy new nailpolish on my toes. But after months of medicated powder and creams, I can say it has cleared up.

I'm a matching type person too, so I will start painting my toes to match my fingers. Right now I have some old red on my toes and OPI, "Nice Color, Eh?" on my fingers.

To those who said that they wish their fingers didn't chip. I followed the advice on another thread that a manacurist posted on (I'll see if I can find it) and when I bought the nail polish, I bought the base coat and top coat that she recommended. I painted my fingers on Friday night and I have to say that it still looks pretty good. I had to fill in one tiny chip. I don't think it will last two weeks like she says it will, but maybe with more practice it will do better.

I've already gotten so many complements on my fingers. :goodvibes No one really noticed my toes at the same time but I wasn't exactly wearing sandals either. It's cold here!

And this is what I copied and took to ULTA with me. WLDPNY, if you are still around, thanks so much for your advice!

I am a cosmetologists and have been doing nails for 12 yrs. OPI and Creative Nail Design polish are the best. However, most professional polishes go on without bubbles. The reason you might get bubbles in any polish is because of shaking the color. NEVER shake, always roll upside down between hands.

Also, I have had alot of people complain over the yrs about wearability. Polish sticks to an artificial surface, however if you have natural nails the prep you do on the nail is the key. Make sure all the oils are off the nail bed with a nail dehydrator (if you use polish remover for this step make sure it isn't a moisturizing remover). The base coat and top coat are key. The best base coat is by Creative Nail Design called "Stickey", it actually gets stickey on the nail and increases the adhesion of the polish to the nail.
Then put on 2 coats of color. Then get a thicker, fast dry top coat. I use "Seche Vite".
I promise it works. I have manicure clients that come in every two weeks and there polish is still on, with minimal chips if any.

Hope this all helps...and remember, Nails are jewels NOT tools!!!!

I never wear polish on my fingernails, but every once in a while I will spluge on a french manicure. My toes are usually painted in the summertime.
