My 9 year old DD asked me today if she could change her name. I was so sad because I really love her name. Nealy. Its a very old Irish name that fits her to a T. Nealy has red hair and beauitful blue eyes.

has anyone else had their children want to change their names ? Out of all of our 5 children she has been the only one. (she is also the youngest)

Neither of mine have ever said they didn't like their names.

I have never been overly fond of my own though.

I love the name Nealy.

My son seems to like his name and he likes the fact that he has two middle names because it makes him different :)

So far DD has no complaints. ;) :p

I always wanted to change my name. It's way too common.

The 7 year old- Gabrielle came home from kindergarten a few years ago and asked "why couldnt you name me something like kia"...thats pronounced with a long I....I asked her why, and she said because her name is too long to write out. LOL

then last year in 1st grade, she had an issue with her middle name- with 9 letters in her 1st, 9 in her 2nd, and 8 in her last, putting them all together "took forever mom"...

DD6- has 3 long names too- 1st is 8 2nd 9 and last 8 ..

Poor kids!

DH's name is John Adam, and mine is Brandy Lynn, so neither of us have long names LOL....

Brandy

I have always liked my nickname Kitty better than my "real" name, Elizabeth!! My boys have never really said if they like or dislike their names.:D

I do have to admit I have no problems with Shannon (Browneyes) calling me E!!:teeth:

DS8 told me he likes his name. Too much so, actually. I terminated my ex-husband's parental rights to my son and wanted to change our last names to my maiden name or something--ANYTHING than my ex-husband's last name. But, DS8 wouldn't hear of it--"mom, EVERYBODY already KNOWS my name." Rather than battle, I have left it alone. However, if I ever remarry (:earseek: ), I would want my husband to adopt Josh, thus changing his last name.

my kids do like their names.

my 13 year old Jennifer goes by "Jen". she only knows one other Jennifer her age, but once when I was shopping I met a girl about 5 years older than my daughter, who was also "Jennifer (our last name)".

My 11 year old Rebecca (Becca) knows another Rebecca in her class, and in preschool she knew a "Rebecca (our last name)".

When my son was about 4 years old, he became obsessed with the name Mat (spelled like that--just one T). Everything thing he owned that could be named was named Mat. Every story he told was about Mat. Sometimes he would just decide he *was* Mat. But he never actually said he didn't like the name we gave him. And we knew noone named Mat, Matt, or Matthew. No idea where it came from.

Edited to add--this JUST occured to me. His half-brother is named Matthew. LOL I wonder if he had a hand in that? I'll have to ask my ex and his wife.

LOL My mom's name is Jennifer Lynn also!!!!! :teeth: She wanted to change her name when she was younger (I only know because my mom said something last weekend).

I wanted to change my name. My last name is a long German name (11 letters!!! Yikes!!) and so I always have to tell people how to spell it. On top of it my first and middle name are spelled differently: Marea (alternative to Maria) and Clare (alternative to Claire). So I have to spell those for people if I was the correct spelling. Drives me insane!!! Or, if people see my first name, they ask how it's pronounced. I wanted to change my name to Heidi...a German name I loved. I even signed letters with that name....LOL. Then it changed to Ozma (OMG yes...thanks to Wizard of Oz...lol) Then to Elizabeth. :smooth:

But, I go by Clare now (my middle name). At the moment I'm happy with it, though I still dislike having to tell people how to spell it. lol :)

Where I grew up in Iowa there was another family who had the same first names as my parents. And they had the same last name (spelled exactly the same.) AND their DD was named Jennifer Lynn.

We used to get each others phone calls and mail quite often.

oh my!!! That's so funny!! It would be very confusing though! Almost seem like someone took your identity?

DD who is grown now with a family of her own, didn't like her name when she was a child. It isn't a very common name and thus we couldn't find things that were already personalized with her name on.

Now that she is older, she has confessed to me that she likes her name because it's fairly unique. She does come on these boards and may see this but I'll tell you anyway.....her name is Starleen but most everyone calls her Star. When she is/was asked how she got her name, she has been known to tell people that her parents were hippies (not really) and that her brothers name is Moon. (it's not!)

My daughter Madison hates her name and only will go by Maddie, my boys, Devon and Chase have never complained,. Funny thing is Maddie has never been in class with another Madison(as popular as that is now) but Devon and Chase are with at least one other one every year! I've noticed that Chase seems to be the most popular around here and I tried so hard to make sure his name was different!?

Mollie....I spelled it with an "ie" instead of the usual "Y"
& my DD used to complain all the time, when she was younger..."why did you do that to me mom??"
Now that she's older she sees it as "different"....and likes it.
I still have relatives that send her cards with it spelled Wrong!!
I'm sure she'll go through life and correct them!

p.s. I love Nealy...what a wonderful Irish name, I spelled my DD's name Mollie Meaghan...the old Irish way!

I hate my name "Louise". I always said I'd grow into it when I hit senior citizen age.. The worst part of it, my mom was right out of high school when she had me in the 1960's. I told her couldn't you have named me something cool like Sunshine(flower child name), then my nickname could have been sunny or something like that. My kids names are Brandon and Haylee. DS is only 5 and never said anything about his name. DD is still an infant. But everyone said she'll hate me for spelling it different. We'll see.

My DS, who is just about to turn 10 came up to me about 2 years ago to tell me he wanted to change his name to Spencer. I asked him where he heard that name and he said, "It's Tony Hawk's son's name!" So, we called him Spencer for a few weeks and then it was over - back to Austin! Ha! I knew it would be a temporary thing........
