A political workplace...

I consider myself to be a moderate/conservative. I work for a company that is comprised mostly of fanatical left wingers. I am not exaggerating.

Now, I have no problem with people's different views. However, I and a number of other people in the political minority feel very uncomfortable here because of it. There is a definite attitude of liberalism at my job. And if you don't agree with them, you are treated as a second class employee.

I know I chose to work in this profession and I chose to work in this office. But I really don't feel that politics should even be discussed at work. Is that wrong?

I'm bringing this up because, while I do respect everyone's opinion, we have one very extreme gentleman in my department who IMO, goes beyond having a different opinion to the point where he is downright offensive (He is an anti-Semite who blames Israel for virtually all of the worlds problems). I am very offended by that statement. It's one he has stated over and over again, and no one ever questions him. When he took 3 months leave to go to the Middle East to fight with the Palestinians, everyone in my dept. was supposed to pitch in money to buy him a gift to show our support. I refused and explained that I can not support a guy who is going to get involved in a conflict he has no business getting involved in, and who is not going there as a peacekeeper, but instead as a fighter with the Palestinians, I was treated like *I* was the one who was a "racist".

There have been other incidents as well (such as he is a vegan and has given me a hard time about eating meat at lunch). It's gotten to the point where I just sit back, shut up and take it when they are all yapping about how America is evil, Israelis are evil, we caused 9/11, Christianity is terrible, religious people are stupid etc. etc. (I am not Christian either, by the way, but it still makes me sick that these people are so judgmental of everyone who does not agree with them).

And then I think why should I be the one who has to sit back and take it? I was asked to remove an American flag from my desk because I was told it would offend the anti -war people and employees from other countries. I was told to remove a newspaper clipping of my good friend in Iraq in his uniform from my desk. I did fight that one and they allowed me to keep it up as long as I moved it out of public view.

My HR dept. is useless. Going to them, they will side with the others, or tell me to just ignore it. I REALLY do not want to quit. Grrrr. I guess I am just venting because it gets really annoying having to come in to work everyday and listen to people talk politics (they do this, literally , for about 4 hours each day off and on).

Politics & Religion, IMO should not be discussed at work (unless you are working on a political campaign or something where it's acceptable). A comment here and there , fine, but otherwise let it go and respect the fact that just because you are the majority at a company does not mean you are not offending and annoying your co-workers every day.

So what should I do? Like I said, human resources is pretty much useless.

PLEASE DO NOT TURN THIS INTO A DEBATE. I DID NOT POST THIS ON THE DB BECAUSE I DON'T WANT THIS TO BECOME A POLITICAL DEBATE. THIS IS ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT POLITICS SHOULD BE DISCUSSED IN THE WORKPLACE.

Thank you :)

DH works on Capital Hill...so ah yeah..politics are discussed. He isnt political at all...he holds no opinions on anything. So, it doesn't bother him as much as others.

On your same lines...I worked in an office that was completely religious. If you evenspoke of a religion other than Catholic or spoke of not agreeing with the Pope..God Save You..in that office anyway.

It was aweful..and I sopke with my supervisor about it; she explained that I was not the first to say something and they had been told before. But they had been there for 10 and 6 years and I had been there 4 months. I should have known there was a problem when I was introduced and they said oh you were named after a saint..you must be catholic! Finally, I just quit. I can't work in an office where I am condemned almost daily! LOL!

I wish I had a better advice for you. But I agree! I dont think either should be spoken of in the office. I have a cousin that is sooo self righteous and adament that he is right. It is scary when people get like that..I dont talk to him EVER about Catholism or polotics. God knows...I am sure he would have me excommunicated!LOL!

works in a very politically alligned workplace,, can honestly say every employee here voted exactly the same way and they dont argue about it, they calmly discuss the issues and how they should vote, its very peaceful, we even all go to the polls at the same time together too....

Of course since the entire company consists of my wife and i and i always mind the boss..... that settles a bunch of it too:)

As long as it isn't in front of clients/customers, I think it is fine to discuss politics in the workplace.

Sounds like they're all for diversity. As long as it's their form of diversity.
That sounds awful. What kind of business are you in?
I work in a pretty political environment by nature, but everyone seems to keep it fairly low-key.

Wow--so sorry to hear that your work environment is making you uncomfortable. It's one thing to discuss politics and religion at work and a completely different thing for others to be so judgemental. Usually a discussion involves willing participants but it sounds like other people are sorta forcing their beliefs and points of view on you. I'm sorry I don't have any advice. Have you tried telling this person directly to please keep his opinions to himself? I know, like that would really work:rolleyes: but maybe it's worth a try.

Thanks all.

I work in book publishing. I actually work in a claims department that also handles customer service (call center).

Your quote about "all for diversity as long as it's their kind" is so true. It just gets so frustrating some days.

Talking to him would not work. He is so self righetous and so certain he is right and no one else could possibly be right that he is impossible to talk to.

Even if it makes employees feel uncomfortable and like they are terrible people for not agreeing with the masses?

Try being a conservative journalist! Actually, at my first paper, politics were never discussed. At the second, we discussed some issues, but never really argued - everyone was understanding. (Even the Democrats! :p ) I don't think I could work with a guy like that, though.

That sounds awful. I'm so sorry you had to go through with that. I'm not Catholic and I study ancient civilizations, thus wear ancient Egyptian jewelry, like of ancient gods and goddesses, all the time, I bet they would have thought I was satanic. :teeth:

I well guess they would hate then. Because I will not talked period unless i have to. I would tell them not talked about political or Religion or I will telled where they can take there opionions period.

But I am a mean one so not that people talked to at work. That is a good thing so I won't hurt people feels because I am so outspoken.

lawyers are, by nature, political creatures. we always seem to wind up talking politics. in part, it's because so many lawyers were political science majors in college, and in part because politics affects the law very directly.

I am in favor of the free flow of ideas. I am in favor of political discussion. i don't think it should be banned at work.

unless it is a distraction.

you have a right to feel comfortable at work. that's why there are laws rotecting you from sexual harassment and discrimination based on race, religion, etc.

if it's making you uncomfortable they should be told to tone it down.

This is a good way to describe it. It is a distraction because it is so prevalent, has nothing to do with researching our customer's claims which is what we are there to do, and because you are literally ostracized if you do not agree with the majority.

The one guy I think , crosses the line to hate speech because he so hates the USA and he so hates Israel and everyone who lives in or has roots in these two countries. Why he chooses to live and work in the USA is beyond me.

I just feel like there is nothing I can do about it aside from quit my job. :(

I know what I'm getting ready to say is ugly, but I would probably just look at him and say "Shut up! I don't give a rat's behind about your views and I shouldn't have to listen to it while I'm trying to do my job!"

Sometimes you just have to shock people.

Good luck in your situation - I feel for you!

Oh how I'd love to :D

I feel for you. In my office politics is not discussed a whole lot. But whenever it is, I have a co-worker that blames EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING on the Democrats. To a point that whenever ANYTHING goes wrong at work from a stopped up toilet to a leaking roof, we blame it on the Democrats!

People who are just so sure they are right about everything...grrr...sounds like my workplace. I feel for you. I don't understand why people can't just either not discuss politics at work, or at least respect that not everyone thinks like they do.

I was on the flip side of the political coin in my last job and was actually told if they would have known my husband worked for a labor union, I would not have been hired. Most of the time I just smiled and walked away or changed the subject when politics came up, then I quit. If I would have told one guy to shut up, another guy would have fallen in line to take his place. Conservative politics were part of that corporate culture, and there was no magic pill to cure it.
