Do you want to/need to see Bin Laden's body?

My point is they are trying to protect us from what they think is a sight too gruesome for us to see, yet you can see way worse on prime time TV any night of the week.
"You" who can see way worse? I don't watch those shows. Not everyone does. What's gruesome for a TV show to put out there, vs what's gruesome or appropriate for the government to put out there, are two very different things.

I'm going to believe he is actually dead if Obama declared it. I don't believe it because I like Obama but because I don't think anyone in their right mind would say he was dead if he really wasn't...

Out of morbid curiosity, I'd like to see the body. But, that's just my morbid curiosity speaking. ;)

Like many people told me when I said I didn't like the anti-smoking commercials, you can change the channel, use a dvr, etc. If they post the pictures online no one is forcing you to look at them. Some people will not believe he is dead until they actually see the body, which was disposed of almost immediately.

Why are you looking to fight? I was just giving my opinion - I think it's a bit laughable that they are trying to "protect" us from the sight.

If he wasnt, and he would show up later, that would forever eviscerate this nations trust in the President. I dont think he would do that.

BL is dead.

I voted for the person in office right now...:rolleyes1

Prove it. I want to see the ballot. The original ballot, mind you, not a copy of it, and I want fingerprint evidence that you handled the ballot on the day of the vote. I'm also going to need you to positively disprove that anybody else in your state has the same fingerprints, in case it was actually somebody else's ballot. I'm just saying, lots of people say they voted for somebody to give themselves cover to criticize, and I have a healthy skepticism. Without the ballot and corresponding evidence, I don't believe it happened.

To answer the original question, no, I do not have to see the body and I do not want to see the body. When the pictures invariably leak, I will do my best to avoid seeing them.

I am proud of our servicemen and women and I'm quite confident that they do not need me monitoring or reviewing their work. I do not trust blindly, but I cannot live my life questioning everything when there is no rational foundation for the statements to be questioned.

How would you know that it was really him?

I wouldn't. No one is understanding the point I am trying to make.

If the government doesn't want to show us the pictures because of national security, whatever, that's fine. But to say our sensibilities are too delicate to view them is ridiculous, IMO.

I wouldn't want to see them displayed all over TV though because then those who don't want to see them would. However, I wouldn't have a problem with them posting pics on a particular website.

Someone will leak them on the Internet just like they leaked the Saddam Hussein execution. If you want to see them you'll be able to and if you don't you don't have to. I'm not sure why this is turning into a political debate.

Sorry, snappy, but I have to chime in here.

There is no way that fake blood and fake injuries on a bunch of actors is "way worse" than the real thing.

And my main objection to seeing bin Laden's body is my fear that it will only serve to inflame and agitate his remaining followers.

Those who believe he is dead will continue to believe he is dead. And those who doubt it will continue to believe that it is all a conspiracy.

I just don't see any meaningful purpose to seeing the photos.

That's what I don't get :confused3

And sorry, but the "fake" stuff they show looks awfully real and gory.

I agree with Snapppy in that we have all become so used to blood, guts, gory, not only the fake stuff on crime shows, but on any news channel any given day, that I really don't think there will be anything so shocking that we haven't seen before. What about the photo Time ran on it's cover of the Vietnam/napalm girl? Good Lord, what about the photos that were coming our of NOLA after the Hurricane? That's more disturbing to me than any photo of Bin Laden they could show. Personally, I don't care to see the pictures, but if you want to see them, have at it.

Given all the comparisons on the DIS (and elsewhere) of Osama bin Laden to Hilter, I find it interesting that there was/is also a conspiracy surrounding Hilter's death, with some suggesting that he lived out his days in South America.

Precisely my point. Those were real people.

No one is going to wage Holy War if a character on CSI gets their head blown off, no matter how graphically it is shown.

Exactly my point... :confused3

I feel no need to see pictures or the actual body. I believe that Osama is dead and was buried at sea, and that Muslim burial customs were followed as much as possible under the circumstances. It is just logical not to want a gathering point for his followers to celebrate a martyrdom. And it is also logical not to inflame the entire Muslim world by disprespecting his religion and not following their burial custom. There was nothing to be gained and everything to lose.

There are conspiracy theories about most if not all major events...
Kennedy assasination.... 9/11 .... and a milestone presidential election... :ssst:
to name a few...
