Do you use the maid service?

I never even thought of not letting the maids clean the room. :confused3

The thing I care about the most is getting new towels. Hotels don't provide enough towel racks to hang up your towels and keep track of which towel belongs to which person. So we want new ones everyday. The last thing I want to do is chase down a maid, a cart, or answer the door at 11pm for a towel delivery after a call to front desk.

I do wipe down key places in the room with a disinfectant wipe- especially the tv remote. That's the first thing I do.

when I am on vacation I am not cleaning my own room ! Relax and enjoy your downtime , there is more of a chance you will get sick on the plane or in the parks than from a hotel room.

So what is the horror story about the coffee pots? I always use them but now I am worried.

I almost always let maid service clean. The only time I haven't is when we've had a ton of stuff in the room. Laptop, shopping bags, suitcases everywhere, blah, blah, blah, and I just didn't want anyone in there. If I need clean towels I call housekeeping and I always tip. I bring Lysol too. I spray door knobs, the remote, light switches. All the stuff that gets touched a lot. And the tub. I worry about athletes foot. We don't touch comforters. I love hotels that wrap the blankets in sheets. But I also try not to dwell on what germs could be there because then I won't enjoy myself.

Ditto. So thats what I'm wondering too! We usually stay in rooms with kitchens (cheaper with a family of 6 than eating out every night) & I bring all of my own paper plates, cups, etc., wipe down the counters/remotes with clorox wipes, & remake each bed with my own sheets & blankets from home, but I always use their coffee pots...

We don't use it. When we get to our room the first time, I go around with a can of Lysol and sometimes a Clorox wipe. After that, we keep our "Do Not Disturb" sign up. If we need new towels, etc. my dad typically pays attention to when housekeeping is in the area and just trades out towels with them directly (my mom has a hard time getting started in the morning, so they are often still in the room when housekeeping comes by).

I saw something about cleaning glasses in the rooms online the other day as well - ick!

BTW - I'm weird when we stay at a timeshare resort with kitchen as well. That dishwasher gets run and I wash dishes before we've used any dishes!

Well, one of my concerns is that they clean the toilet and then may not clean their hands/gloves before wiping down or touching other surfaces. Another is wiping down surfaces with cleaning cloths that are dirty or have been used in multiple rooms. Do they clean the coffee maker the same way (with glass cleaner and a possibly dirty towel/gloves)? How about those nasty bedspreads (washed every few months, definitely not between guests) that some motels still have - I take those things off, fold them and put them in the corner when I arrive and Lysol the bedsheet that touched it underneath. I wouldn't want them putting those things back on my bed daily, either.

I just like to clean over that stuff when I get into the room and not worry about having to do it again on the trip (just the usual cleaning up after yourself thing). That first trip into the room and the initial once-over is typically the most stressful part of my hotel stay - I wouldn't want to repeat it every day if I let the maid in.

I basically could have written all of the above.

We don't let them in during our stay. If we want more towels, we ask. I don't want that nasty comforter put back on every day, that's for sure! And I just feel more comfortable having no one come in at all while we're there.
